Spidey’s Serene Sunday – Part 54

photoeffect_1422795014176.jpeg

“Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.” – Confucius

Isn’t this totally true?

I think in all aspects of life, things were simpler, then along came religion,  money, power, technology, Reality TV…. You know what I mean.

See those families in tiny rural villages, away from all the mod cons of life. How happy are they?

The poorest people are often the happiest. Just look at the wide smiles on the faces of street urchins in a Bombay Slum.  Then compare their expressions with those of a child from a well to do family.

Wars, terrorism, poser struggles.

All very real problems.

But only problems because we have allowed them to become problems.

Step back today. Simplify one thing. Strip back life.

See if it makes you feel better!

Have a wonderfully simplistic Sunday Peeps!

Over my life I have complicated my life to point I would joke, “why do it the simple way when one can make it complicated?” The mental gymnastics to create problems is one my true talents.

I am reminded of Shakespeare’s quote: “There is nothing good or bad, but thinking makes it so.” At least one should think of simplicity as “good” – mentally, materialistically, etc. Lord knows I’m trying.

So very true sister. So many are consumed with trivial materialistic things and lose the appreciation for the simple blessings of life. Great wisdom, Spidey!

“The poorest people are often the happiest. Just look at the wide smiles on the faces of street urchins in a Bombay Slum. Then compare their expressions with those of a child from a well to do family.”

A snapshot is not a life. And the street urchins of Bombay are not happy with their simple life.

I think this is the danger of simplification. Its easy to look at a picture of a moment and project that moment onto their entire existence. When in reality their existence is one of perpetual hunger, of fear of rape and beating, of sickness, of loneliness, of needing to hurt others merely to survive. And because they are human they find ridiculous things and laugh.

It is true that we can over think our own problems, and we can clutter our lives with unnecessary things, but life is never entirely simple. Its moments of tragedy are often punctuated by laughter, its moments of happiness are often tinged with a sad nostalgia. But I would argue that its the complexity that gives life is beauty, its depth and its interest.

I love the concept that you have presented but would challenge your statement that all was simple until “along came religion, money, power, technology, Reality TV.” That is a very misleading statement to anybody reading this because not one of those things complicated our lives. Religion has never complicated any lives, but rather, peoples interpretation has caused complications. Money and power are only complications because of the way our species uses/abuses it. Technology is only as a big a complication as we allow it to be.

In summary, no abstract can complicate our lives unless we make it happen. Our lives are very complicated because we allow it, and we must therefore take full responsibility for that rather than laying blame. Just some thoughts. 🙂

Sounds right. Maybe some people simply like a challenge and have to make them up. If you’re struggling to survive day by day then you don’t really need to add any complications. Those of us that have it ‘easy’ might unintentionally create personal strife like it’s an instinct or something.

It’s absolutely true! Life would be so simple if we did not make it complicated! Great quote and thoughts, Sis! 😊

Yes very true Ritu. . Life is very simple and plain, but we make it complicated in our mind. And one complex mind further complicates other complex mind by sharing complex views thus this chain making everything complex. Have a beautiful Sunday. 🙂

I agree with you. In our society, the more we have then the more we want it seems. Caused by long term conditioning and blatant advertising and consumerism.

That is entirely correct… and I wonder, what are we teaching our children by giving them so much? On one hand we give because we can and we feel happy we are able, but on the other, they won’t ever feel the need to wait or to appreciate…
