Spidey’s Serene Sunday – Part 382 – Fate Or Hard Work?

“Everything happens when it’s supposed to.”

Michelle C. Ustaszeski

Thank you, Spidey, for finding a quote that I can discuss, what with different things floating around in my head… again!

This time, I wanted to talk about fate.

How many of you just leave things to fate?

Or do you think it’s just sheer luck that created an opportunity for you, and not your own efforts?

The reason I have been thinking about this is that I have been getting many lovely comments and congratulations for the fact that I was approached by a publisher.

Unlike many, I was not looking for representation. It would seem that I was just in the right place at the right time.

Fate.

Or Luck.

And initially, I thought that too, and almost felt like a fraud. I haven’t done anything special to receive these congratulations.

But, then again, I did write a book. And I have run a successful blog for a good few years. Not forgetting releasing a poetry book.

No, I wasn’t looking for a publisher. But, yes, that was a dream once. And even though it happened organically, it doesn’t take way from the hard work that I put in every day, to get to where I stand now.

So, I guess it was fate, It was meant to be.

But it needed me to put in my own leg work before what was fated actually happened.

I always thank whatever force it is who looks after us for blessing me with so much to be grateful for, and for giving me the mind to get to where I am, right now, in all facets of life. This publishing deal has just been the icing on the cake, for me.

So, do you believe in fate or sheer hard work?

Wishing you a wonderfully peaceful Sunday, Peeps!

Hi Ritu, most things that happen in life are 85% hard work, 10% talent and then 5% fairy dust (or luck). Congratulations on your achievement, you have worked hard for it.

Yes, it was fate and meant to be, a just reward for all your hard work.

I think success is 90% hard work and 10% the stars aligning. If someone discounts your publishing deal as luck, I’d say that sounds like jealousy. I am encouraged when this happens to someone else because I know it’s possible, though still unlikely.

One example I think of in our lives was being able to retire at a relatively young age. We achieved that by working hard—not luck. You should be proud, Ritu!

I think fate favours those who are in the right place at the right time, and those who are in tune with themselves and follow their instincts. I believe it’s passion, commitment and energy that prepares the way, not simply hard work. The main protagonist of the Hero’s Journey often wins through not only by their own resources, but through the loyalty and confidence they inspire in others.

Don’t worry about less work, Sis! You have worked hard the last year. I followed your postings, and the weekly “Chai and Chat”-series. There is no doubt, if only because of the many books you have read, and that you recently presented. Thanks a lot, and walk the cat. Lol xx Michael

Hi Ritu – an age-old question. I think it’s a combo-pack. Congratulations on your great publishing news! Well-deserved even if you weren’t looking for it 🙂

Ritu, best wishes with your opportunity. I am interpreting your first quote that things will happen, not when you are ready, but when it happens. Opportunity does not often come at the exact moment you want, but when it wants. We just need to be prepared to seize it and not let it go by because now is not the time. My favorite author Malcom Gladwell in “Outliers” noted even very smart people sometimes do not realize when opportunity comes and need someone to nudge them along. So, two of his success factors are being given opportunity and seizing such opportunity. Good luck with this one. Keith

Thank you, Keith. You are right that opportunities arise when we least expect them, so we should be open to squeezing them whenever they come by!

Ritu, there is an old line that goes “opportunity is often missed as it is dressed up as hard work.” Sometimes we pass on things because they look too hard. Gladwell speaks of Bill Gates programming from 1 am in the morning for several hours on the University of Washington computers as that is when they were available. Gladwell notes that Gates got up out of bed to go program all night which many students that age would not have. Keith

We need to have this picture in our hearts, see it with, and be convinced it is only a matter of when not of if. Going with that feeling we need to be attentive to see the signs, grab them, and take action whenever needed. Sometimes it needs hard work, sometimes only a change in attitude. But which way ever, when we have the patience we will know exactly, when things are meant to unfold. Great encouragement, Sis!

I believe in both. There is no doubt that you put in all the work and effort to write your book. Fate could not have presented the opportunity to be published had you not done so. Mazel Tov on your great leap forward. I shall be ordering your book ASAP.

Thank you so much. It’s strange but sometimes I think Fate must have intervened, as I wasn’t actively looking! But, yes, youre right. Had the book not been there, the opportunity wouldn’t have existed 😊
