Ronovan’s Weekly Haiku Challenge – #74 – Cake & Wolf

image

Monday night means sitting at the kids drum lesson, and thinking up Haiku for the lovely Ronovan, and his weekly haiku challenge. Check it out here.

The prompt works this week are Wolf & Cake… Hmmm interesting… Could be very obvious… Or not!

Ok so obvious…

Dessert
Wolfing down dinner
With my eyes on the dessert
Rich chocolate cake!

And the deeper…

Victim – a tanka
Fangs encrusted with
Blood from his many victims
He turns and glances
Fixing me with his cold eyes…
His wolfish stare pins me down.

But I Smile Anyway...

Friday Fiction with Ronovan #4- It’s Not Happening

Friday is the day Ronovan allows us to get busy with a flash fiction prompt.  There were no word limits to the previous prompts, but, as Ronovan says this week, the true meaning of flash fiction is to keep it succinct.  Short and sweet.  Trim the fat.

That is always hard for me. I talk too much, hence I also write too much too!

Check out his prompt post here.  Aside from actually making sure we keep to a limit of 500 words, or under, he suggested thinking of an adult situation but from a child’s perspective.

Now for my attempt this week. Any opinions are welcome!

It’s Not Happening

When will it stop?

It doesn’t matter how far under the covers I go, I can still hear them. They think I’m asleep. They think I’m too young to understand.

But I’m not so young that I can’t work things out for myself.

It happens all the time.

The shouting. The slamming of doors. Then the next morning, the frosty glances at each other, but these huge smiles, and eyes brimming with love, looking at us.

They are fighting all the time nowadays, mum and dad. But not in front of us. My younger brother, he really is too little. He hasn’t a clue. But I am not stupid…

This is what happens before…

I don’t want to say it.

But my friend at school, he had parents who fought all the time, and they, well, they aren’t together anymore. He says he’s happy, he gets two of everything nowadays, two birthdays, two Christmas Days, and whenever they are having more disagreements, he gets one off presents too, it’s like they are buying him.

The thing is, when I look at him, really look at him, there is way too much sadness in his 11 year old eyes. I’ve seen him, looking at other friends of ours, with their parents at school functions, and he might think he can hide it, but there is that sense of longing for peace, and happiness in his own parent’s life.

Back to now.

Is this what is happening here? Why are they fighting so much? Are we doing something wrong? Is it me? I didn’t mean to get that detention the other day, but I overslept in the morning, after being awake, listening to them argue, and because I was late, the teacher just slapped me with that yellow note… One hour detention.

Mum was livid when I got home, she didn’t know why I was late, and then she told dad, and later that night, they were at it again…

Or was it when I asked for the new X-Box? I didn’t mean to get stroppy, but when I stomped off, because Dad said no, the murmuring started again. I knew they would be fighting before long.

Maybe I’ll get my homework done faster, do all my reading, before mum says. I’ll tell my brother to tidy up with me, and we can even make them breakfast, or do the hoover.

That’ll show them we love them, and that we aren’t bad. I’ll even say sorry.

As long as it stops the shouting… the fighting… the possibility that….

Thank you for reading!

It was taking ages, her hands were tired, but oh it was looking beautiful.

She watched as the girl created more and more intricate patterns on her hands and feet.

She had always loved henna, but this was a different thing altogether.  After all, this was the big one, the wedding henna. This was the one that, according to tradition, would predict what her mother in law would think of her… and how deep her husband-to-be’s love for her would be.

In a few hours all would become clear.

As the dried henna flaked off, she could see the bright orange colours revealing themselves. A deep, rich burnt sienna tone… and it was getting darker still…

Thank God!

At least she wasn’t going to have to bat silly comments from the old biddies in the family, who were eager to see what the outcome of the henna test was. Yes, apparently she would be loved by her Mother-in-Law, and her husband would be head over heels in love with her…

And anyway, 2 nights before the wedding, it was a little too late to be worrying about these things, wasn’t it? It’s not like she would have been able to call off the wedding!

Thank you  for reading!

And as always, please, take part in the challenge to all of you!

FFF #23 – Pure Imagination

I can’t believe I’ve been FFF-ing so long! We’ve hit 23 weeks now since Matt at The Book Blogger stsrted this challenge, where we get a prompt song to write a 100 word flash fiction piece.
This week it is a cover of the track Pure Imagination, by Fiona Apple…
Made famous in the original Willy Wonka film, it’s a true favourite of mine!

Check out the prompt here.

Totally broken, I came out of the school.

I couldn’t believe she had lied. All that detail, all those stories, those tears…

I was devastated that my child was going through so much, almost torture, at school and that no one was listening to, or helping her.

In I went, all guns blazing, and really took the Head Teacher to task. My child was being bullied, verbally, physically, and I hadn’t been informed of anything… homework destroyed, lunches stolen…

Only to be told it had been a pure work of her twisted imagination.

It was her who was the bully.

But I Smile Anyway...

“Now, that’s a carrot and a half!” Nina exclaimed, as she checked out her booty from the allotment this week.  Nothing genetically modified about that one! In fact, it would have never made it to a kitchen, let alone her plate, had it been in one of the fields of the huge supermarket chains.  Definitely not a politically correct carrot, not the required 6 inches long, or what ever the job description stated for carrot vacancies nowadays.

But it was her carrot, lovingly planted, and watered, and cared for.  And oooh it would help to make a great soup!

As previously stated, I open this challenge to all of you, my readers, if you wish to take part!
