Chai And A Chat #83 #ChaiAndAChat #CoronaDiaries Week 7

So, it’s been seven weeks of living in this surreal world of lockdown. How are you coping?

  • We started the week with May the 4th, or Star Wars day, as it is recognised by many!
  • I was in school on Monday with the children. There were five children at the start of the day, and we had a pleasant day, learning about VE Day, making bunting, aand even creating a bunker from some large boxes my colleague brought in, because one of the children wanted to!
  • I was so proud of myself on Tuesday. I had to pop into work again for a couple of hours, to create a document to aid the transition to nursery for those parents who have children starting in September. Instead of a simple Word document, I made my first ever Power Point presentation! And it looks pretty good, even if I say so, myself!
  • A not so quick trip to the supermarket followed. The queue was long, and so I composed a story on my phone while waiting!
  • There was no more school for me the rest of the week, so it was devoted to online learning and writing short stories for the Story A Day in May challenge I have signed up to, as well as reading.
  • Lil Man has rediscovered his love for the dhol again, and he really impressed me with his skills!
  • I even spent a whole afternoon looking at the books I had to read on my Kindle, and comparing them with my Amazon orders, then compling them into a LONG list on the computer. I now know I have a book problem. It is a long book problem, involving nearly two hundred books I have to read! I shall have to use the wish list function on Amazon for other books I want to read, so I make myself read what I have before getting more!
  • There were the VE Day socially distanced Street Party celebrations on Friday too. It was fun to bake for a purpose, and we stayed for a short while, sitting at a distance from the rest of the neighbours, but close enough to be able to have a chat, before coming home. The weather was glorious too, so we came home and lay in the sun, practicing mindfullness by colouring!
  • The weekend was a mixed bag, weather-wise. A sunny Saturday followed by a dull, colder Sunday. On Saturday, Hubby Dearest managed to get his plants and flowers and coloured the garden beautifully. The hope was to get the lawn reseeded and watered, but the new hosepipe we ordered won’t stay on the tap! Oh well! I managed to get the kids to help hand wash the two family cars at least! Sunday was glorious in the morning, then the clouds came, mid afternoon. Here, we had a smattering of rain, but I know some places in the UK were deluged with the wet stuff!
  • Old BoJo made his announcement on the Sunday, so now the lockdown looks like this… Much the same, but with some ambiguous statements. He’s changed his statement from Stay Home to Stay Alert. What does that mean? There was talk of if you are unable to work from home, and work in industries such as construction or manufacturing, you should be trying to go in, in a socially distanced fashion, and avoiding use of public transport. And from Wednesday, we can go out for exercise more than once a day, but still only with your household, and by walking.
  • He did mention schools… the possibility of staggered openings but not until June 1st at the earliest, at the stage two of reducing Lockdown, depending on statistics and that R number they keep on talking about. This would possibly involve Primary schools first and the year groups Reception, (my year) Year 1 and Year 6. And maybe, children due to take important exams next academic year, such as Year 10 and Year 12 may hope to get back for a while at least, before the official Summer holidays, to prepare for their big years next year.
  • Basically, I think we are still just as confused as we were before. I’m not convinced that allowing the youngest back first is the best idea. They are going to be the hardest to socially distance! Oh, well. clueless as ever. Let’s see… There are more government meetings tomorrow. We might hear more by then.

This week, I am not on the rota so other than a possible Zoom meeting (my first real one) with my Reception team, I will be mainly concentrating on online leaarning, writing, and occupying the kids!

Oh, what joy!

What have you been up to?

Stay safe, my dear friends!

Chai And A Chat #82 #ChaiAndAChat #CoronaDiaries Week 6

Week six completed of this #newnormal we have all been living in. How are you coping? Are they talking about relaxing Lockdown where you are? Here, there is talk, but nothing concrete. We still have to wait until next week, for the PM and his cronies to give us the next stage of #coronagate.

Anyway, I digress! Have you got your drink ready?

Oh, I don’t know… the days are all blurring into one another, aren’t they?

  • On Monday, I completed a course about Special Educational Needs provisions within school. That was really interesting, and the information will really help me along the way, once we get back to normality.
  • On Tuesday, after the usual morning grocery shop, I came home, and bingewatched Four More Shots Please, on Amazon Prime. If you haven’t heard of it, it is basically an Indian-style Sex in the City, based in Mumbai, and there were two seasons, so I watched a whole season in one day!
  • On Wednesday, Lil Princess wanted to watch another new series that had started, on Netflix, Never Have I Ever. It was something on my radar too, as it’s about an American Indian girl, and her dilemmas of being a young American girl, with the Indian ideals behind her. We watched it together and laughed, and related with many parts of it, and it provided the opportunity for plenty of chats too, about various subjects. A good one!
  • On Thursday, I was meant to have been going into school, but due to a couple of days where there were no children coming in, the rota got changed around, so I did pop in for a short while, to pass some books on to my head teacher, but then I came home, and was in bed the rest of the day, with a God-awful migraine! I took the time to rest up, but I hold my hand up. I also ended up watching the second season of Four More Shots Please! I really enjoyed it.
  • Other things… well. I managed to do another couple of modules on the writing course, so there are 5 left, I think. And I accessed the first two theory modules of the Calligraphy course I signed up to, I submitted my assessments, so am just waiting to get the results. What else? Oh, I watched a free webinar for newbies to the Scrivener software, and my mind was blown! There are so many features on that software. I have signed up for a course to get more to grips with that too!
  • And what of my dear WIP? Book two is definitely coming along slow and steady… I’ve had some more lovely reviews for Marriage Unarranged, and was amazed to see I had reached 50 ratings on Goodreads! And nearly 40 reviews on Amazon. Enough to make me know I have to get more written. So I got my story board made. If you have been following me for a while, you’ll know I did something similar for my first book baby, when I needed structure. So the board came out, as did the Post-Its and the coloured chalk pens.
  • And my writing nook is developing nicely too! I have signed up for Story A Day In May, and I couldn’t believe that I wrote a short story that was over five thousand words long on Friday, and another at two and a half thousand on Saturday! Having my little space makes a huge difference!
  • I’ve been reading, and enjoying the downtime I do have too. Sonu Singh comes regularly for cuddles, though I think I may have to start fighting him for use of my chair as he has realised it feels rather nice with my fleecy Purple throw on it!

So, it doesn’t feel like I did all that much, but I did, didn’t I?

I still didn’t record stories… maybe this week…

But I am in school teaching today, and I know I’ll be in tomorrow, looking at some paperwork we need to get onto the website for the parents of new starters for Seeptember. Usually we do home visits, but that won’t be likely to happen this year. Other than that, it will be online learning, for school and my own personal development, and reading, writing, cooking, cleaning… the norms for this #newnormal of ours!

How has your week been?

Share the love 💜

Chai And A Chat #81 #ChaiAndAChat #CoronaDiaries Week 5

Honestly, who thought we’d still be here, in lockdown, as we hit the tail end of April? Well, have you got your drink ready? I know we’re on lockdown, and the days and times are just blurring, but no, I’m not suggesting anything stronger than a coffee, or my choice of Chai, unless, of course you are reading this later in the day!

  • Monday arrived, and another morning in school. We’ve got to grips with the planning we need to do for the next few weeks, so my team teach and I set about spending the morning formulating more plans. It is really hard, as we can only choose activities that require minimal ‘teaching’ as such, so no real new topics, but things that parents will be able to access with the children. Remember, they are 4-5 years old, so it’s not like they can do remote learning in the same way as older children. That was probably the toughest part of the planning. But we got it done, thankfully. Only thing was, we decided. against reading the stories and recording them, as it would be quite time consuming… I was a bit gutted to be honest. I was looking forward to it!
  • I was rather excited as the folding desk I ordered got delivered early too! Everyone else has a place to sit and work; Hubby Dearest has taken over the dining table with his millions of monitors (okay, there are two, and a laptop) and the kids both have desks in their rooms. But I have nowhere proper. I can sit on my bed, or downstairs on the sofa, though neither of these places have scope for me to sit with a notebook beside my laptop. So the next best thing was a folding desk. And it arrived! I am very happy with it. Just needed to order a better chair, as the folding one I had was okay for short periods, but not really a good office style chair, and that came on Saturday too, so I am already looking forward to sitting properly to do my online learning, and writing! The only annoying thing is having to put it all away every night, so I got a lovey desk tidy into which I can slip everything I use reguarly.
  • Tuesday was Asda day, as usual, and I got all I needed, but flour and eggs are the main things that are hard to find at the moment. I think I am okay for both at the moment, but I hope these things get sorted sooner, rather than later!
  • I was in school on Wednesday with the children, and there were literally TWO kids! So we had a child each to look after. It was still fun, we did lots of little things, like play board games, and gardening in the allotment, but time went really slowly…
  • Thursday and friday were spent using my lovely new desk doing online courses that we have been suggested to try and do on days we are not in school. It all counts for CPD, or continuous professional development, so I am happy to do it, but that does mean less mental energy and time to actually write.
  • Talking of writing, I have been in a real creative dip again. I opened my manuscript several times, but shut it down, just as many, because I wasn’t inspired, and what was coming out (which wasn’t much at all) was pure rubbish. Instead, I concentrated on reading, some arcs, and some books that have been on my kindle for a while, asking to be read. Something good came out of the reading though. I read books by authors I admire and respect, with extremely high readership levels, and as I read some of the books, I realised that there are times when these established authors don’t actually write fantastically, just okay. They don’t always have these fully developed character arcs, or they don’t explore certain situations in the detail that I have come to think we should do. Sometimes vocabulary is lazy, or repetitive. Yet their books still sell. I came away from one book feeling like I was, possibly, doing a better job… Maybe I need to get back to it…
  • On Friday, as I mentioned in my Spidey post, yesterday, I managed to fall over pretty spectacularly in Lil. Man’s bedroom, while fixing his curtains… I fell backwards from his bed, flat on my back, with him and Sonu, the cat, watching. Avoiding his laptop was luck, but my shoulder struck his dumbells. I’m okay, but I think there was a little delayed reaction to it, from my body. It seems to have triggered a wave of exhaustion in me, and more ovbiously, the aches and pains that were caused by the fall. So that meant I was knocked for. six all weekend. my get up and go totally disappeared… but I still managed a few silly TikToks 😜I’ll share my two favourites for this week.
  • And on Sunday, I finally caved and got Disney+ so we watched the new Lady and the Tramp (I loved it!) and the live action Aladdin (for the second time. Watched it in the cinema before, and loved it!)

Yet another week with days blending into one another. It breaks it up to speak to both sets of parents every night, but the conversations are very samey, because none of us have done anything different. We may get excited to share that we went grocery shopping, but that’s about it! Still, thank goodness for video calls. It is always great to catch up with my Finndian family too. I hate that I am not able to be there physically, but at least the video calling means that we can see our nephews growing up, and build a relationship with them, despite being in a different country.

And now, here we are back to Monday. I am not planning on going into school until Wednesday. So there will be online learning hapenning, and hopefully, writing too! And though I didn’t record stories for our school, I might still do it for my nephews!

How has your week been?

Chai And A Chat #80 #ChaiAndAChat #CoronaDiaries Week 4

Yup, a month of this and we are still going…

  • Another week of not really knowing what day it was, and what I was meant to be doing with myself! Oh, but I did discover TikTok… which you’ll know about if you saw yesterday’s Spidey post!
  • I was featured on Cysters.org, with an article about my journey with PCOS, which was rather special. It was one of the pieces of writing I did the week before… 2,500 words of pain…
  • On Tuesday I spent time updating my Character Bible. It is a great way for me to keep track of the different characters in my books, and as they are interconnected, all the more important when referring back to
  • And got a little more writing done, with my muse in tow!
  • On Wednesday, I had to brave the local hospital for a set of blood tests, as requested by the consultant after my phone appointment. They took a LOT of blood samples! And I have to go back for one more test, as they failed to mention I needed to leave a (#1) sample as well, on the phone. I was dreading going to the actual building, but it wasn’t as bad as all that. They set up a queueing area and as you came in, you were asked if you had a temperature or cough. The nurse at the door checked your temperature before allowing you in. The actual phlebotomy clinic was empty so I was in and out in ten minutes!
  • Oh Thursday, most schools reopened for the next term. When I say open, I use that term extremely loosely. Basically we are still doing the same as before. But we need to add more plans to the school website for the children’s learning. We spent a couple of hours getting a plan ready for the first week, then decided that it would be a great idea to film me reading a story, the next day, to put online for the kids… however, did you know of the minefield of copyright with this? I never did, because there are so many people who upload videos of themselves reading on YouTube. Apparently, it is illegal, unless the books are available. in the Public Domain. And that means a work needs to be well old, basically… However, most publishers and authors are being very good about the whole school and home learning issues at the moment, and have relaxed their rules. As long as we contact them with details of the book we are reading, and name it, along with author and illustrator, upload it on a private educational site, or as unlisted on Youtube, we can record our own, with no comebacks. As long as the videos are removed by the end of the academic year. It’s a bit of a faff, but I’d do it for our babies!
  • Friday was another day of school but I didn’t end up going in, as my team teach wasn’t too well, so. we weren’t going to be able to record stories or plan. That meant another day at home. The kids (mine) have to get used to waking up earlier as well, again, now, as they have been rather lazy over their official holiday… so I was hearing plenty of annoyed moans and groans from them!
  • But, once Lil Man was done with his work, we did a thing. Have you seen the 5 challenge? Run 5 Km, Donate £5, Nominate 5? Basically, you run (or walk. I cannot run!) 5km, then donate £5 to a charity, and then nominate 5 others to do it. I have been walking pretty much daily with him, but it gets a little boring doing the rounds at the walking track we use at the temple sports ground, so we did a long walk along a different route and smashed it! We even managed another 5 km one on the Sunday with the whole family, and I learned of another beautiful green space. walking distance from our house to visit too!
  • I think I truly exhausted myself on Friday because saturday was a day for doing NOTHING! I initiated the kids to a couple more classic Bollywood films from the late 90s and early 2000s and read lots. A perfect day, but definitely nowhere near the steps I should have taken!
  • As I mentioned, the Sunday involved another walk, but we had an Indian style lunch, with me making parathas!

Another week of meh-ness, but we cope. As I type we have been told that we are going through another three week cycle of social distancing and lockdown, before the government can review. Some papers deem it fit to publish information that hasn’t been confirmed, such as some schools may ppen by May 11th… But that has not been confirmed at all. As I mentioned before, I am trying hard not to watch too much news, but I get annoyed when I read misinformed posts and articles. We are going through enough confusion as it is, without publications that many readers trust, publishing untruths or uncomfirmed facts.

But, it’s Monday, again. I might just go and get a story recorded, who knows? And I’ll be with the Key Worker kids on Wednesday, all day. Who knows what the rest of the week holds?

How has your week been? ?

Chai And A Chat #79 #ChaiAndAChat #CoronaDiaries Week 3

I swear I should be writing week fifteen by now…

  • The week was not only another week in this Lockdown, but the apparent Easter Holidays for the kids, so for the first four days of this week, I had to make sure they were sensible and quiet, for their daddy, who was still working from home. To be honest, it was much easier than I thought, because they were still in bed until past eleven am every morning, and if I hadn’t woken them, they probably would have spent all day in bed! Hubby Dearest would get up, and start working. I would make teas and coffees, and do a little exercise after reading for a bit, before finally waking the kids up. During my reading sessions, my faithful Sonu Singh would accompany me, and sometimes, take control of my Kindle too!
  • We received a lovely parcel as well, one day, from my sister in law at the other house, that had been ordered from Cadbury’s… a huge box filled with Easter treats for the children! How kind! And she told me that they had waited for over an hour and a half, in a virtual queue, on the Cadbury’s website, to get a chance to browse the online store, before being able to place the order… see, these queues are stretching to the World Wide Web too, not just Asda! (Don’t worry, I shall share a picture of all the lovely chocolate, a little while later!
  • I’ve been writing too, which has been amazing! Using both Lizzie Chantree’s writing hour in the mornings, via her Facebook group, and Sacha Black’s Rebel Author live writing sprints, I have managed to add around 5k more words to book two, and done some research, as well as write an article for cysters.org, a charity, who in their words, do this…

Cysters is a grassroots charity, dedicated to supporting individuals & improving the health, education & welfare of those with reproductive & mental health issues. We aim to educate the public about reproductive health & education so that they can make informed choices around their treatment options & challenge the cultural misogyny behind reproductive health.

Cysters.org
  • Then, after a particularly fun, productive evening writing session, labelled Poison and Prose (you guessed it, Sacha invited us to bring along our poison of choice; be it a drink, or a naughty snack!) I ended up downloading Scrivener. If you don’t know what Scrivener is, it is a software to help you with not only the writing of your projects, but enabling you to compile all your research for that project, into one place too. It is so much more than that too, but I am still learning… Still, one great feature is the wordcounter which can be a real help to reach your goals.
  • We’ve also spent plenty of time in the garden, as we were blessed with beautiful weather last week. Along with our daily walks in the gurdwara sports ground. Though, I have to mention that I was a tad vigilante this week. In the grounds we have one of those outdoor gyms. It has been cordonned off, as have all areas like this, because of the risk of contamination. Earlier in the week, as I was walking around, a mother shooed her child into it. He was wearing goalie gloves, but swinging on the bars. As I walked past, I asked him to get off and leave the area as it was closed. He looked at me, ran to his mother and burst into tears! I hastily explained to the mother, who was of Eastern European descent, that the place was closed for health reasons. She mentioned that other people were using it the day before, but understood, and explained to her child. The next day, she was there again, but this time there was a rather muscly man who had gone in to do his ‘training’. I wondered whether I should say anything, then someone behind me, a turbanned man, said something a little loudly, to his own friend, about people taking the mick, and getting the place closed down. In Punjabi, I asked him if he would back me up, if I went and asked the man to go. So I shouted over to the guy. Muscle head ignored me at first, but I carried on (I can be quite persistant when I want) and in the end, he left. The day after, I was on my walk, and there were two more. Really? And this time they were Indian, Sikh, so they should have. been much more respectful, knowing the Gurdwara stance on this issue. As I geared up to say something (A bit nervously,) someone else, from the actual sports club did! Thank goodness. On Sunday, we went as a family, and guess what. There were more people in there. I can’t understand why they don’t understand that if they don’t follow the rules, this one luxury we have of being able to go out once daily, for exercise, will be taken from us too. I made my own comments as I walked past, but these guys weren’t listening. They told another person to s*d off when asked to move. So, I wasn’t successful there, but my blood simmered…
  • In other news, Lil Princess has been very creative, with her drawing, and impressed me with her skills again. What do you think?
  • I’ve cooked plenty, from Shahi Paneer, to chicken soup, to lasagne, and pastry puffs… I can feel weight creeping up, but at least I am being active too! That Fifteen Minute Mile workout has been used many times!
  • Then we get to Easter. The family rose late, as usual, and were extremely happy with their collection of eggs!

So… that has been pretty much this week, in a nutshell. This week, school will reopen again, and we will need to be present, on a rota basis, so I’ll find out soon, which days I am meant to be in.

Oh, and it’s Vaisakhi today… It will be strange this year, not being able to go to the Gurdwara to pay our respects, as it would have been strange for all the Christians yesterday, not to attend church. And the big parade will obviously not happen, though they are live streaming the prayers that will still continue.

How has your week been? Did you have a good, calm Easter?
