#SoCS July 27/19 – Dirty/Clean

Linda’s #SoCS prompt this week:

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “clean/dirty.” Use one, use both, use ’em any way you like. Enjoy!

Dirty is exactly how I felt today.

If you aren’t in the UK, we are in the midst of a mini heatwave. The temperatures have hit over 100°F/38°C in some places and we have been sweltering.

I know there are pther places who regularly deal with heat that is over 40°C. In fact my brother sent a photo today showing that where they are in Finland at the moment had a temperature of 48.1°C!

OMG!!! I’d die!

Anyway, here in the UK we are ill prepared for weather that is heatwave worthy. The houses and places of work aren’t generally equipped with air conditioning, and fans – well we all know how much help they are in the heat… pushing hot air around, rather than cooling you down.

The heat itself is just different. The humidity is high and that is what makes it uncomfortable. Days you spend perspiring (not gently, at all) and nights you spend tossing and turning, frantic to find a cool spot on your sheets.

Thursday was my last day at school, and it was the official hottest day of the summer so far. Great day to have all my nursery babies in, with their parents, to celebrate their progress in class this year, in a room that had a tiny fan… twice over!

I started the introductions and whatnot, and could feel rivulets of sweat rolling down the side of my face, dripping down my back, just generally everywhere. A handheld fan made no difference whatsoever. The morning session ended with us saying goodbye, and the hugs we gave the students were sticky.

Then I had a staff leavers assembly to attend. 420 kids in a hall and lots of adults… no AC. It was torture!

After that we had Lil Princess’s leaver’s assembly which was emotional, and I needed tissues for my eyes as well as for mopping my damp brow. They then went outside for photos and general hugs, but it was too hot!

As I began to melt, the children were sent in and parents waved off.

A quick lunch then I had Nursery celebration take 2 with the afternoon session. The sweating was even worse!

We ended the day with a cream tea in one of the 4 classrooms in our school that actually has AC. It was bliss!

Then back into our own rooms that were stifling.

I looked at the mirror. My hair was plastered to my head. I felt itchy. My scalp, dirty with the grime of a busy day.

All I wanted to do was get home and jump in the shower to wash my hair clean.

But I couldn’t. You see there is some crazy superstition in the Indoan culture about washing your hair on a Thursday being bad luck for your brother. Don’t ask me. I just get told these things and they stick in your head.

So I didn’t wash it.

I wasn’t about to yesterday morning either. I had a day full of heaving furtniture around in my new clasroom and I knew I would be sweating buckets again.

What’s the point?

Better I wash it and have a lovely end of day shower.

And, oh my, you should have seen the water as it rinsed off my head… YUCK!

I came out of the shower fresh as a daisy, feeling so cool and CLEAN!

For precisely one minute.

Seriously. That is how long it took for beads of sweat to start forming on my upper lip and forehead again.

What was the point???

But surely rather than hair staying dirty another day, it was better to have at least a moment of clean!

#SoCS July 13/19 – Instructions

Linda’s #SoCS prompt this week:

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “instructions.” Write instructions for anything you know how to do. As detailed or as rambling as you’d like. Enjoy!

Instructions For How Not To Write A Book

  1. Have a brilliant idea
  2. Start writing it
  3. Spend 18 years snatching moments to write
  4. Finally type The End
  5. Realise that is not the end really
  6. Reread.
  7. Rewrite
  8. Reread
  9. Rewrite
  10. Get readers
  11. Rewrite
  12. Try and submit to agents
  13. Feel down, then perk up when you remember J.K. Rowling and Stephen King had many rejections
  14. Find an editor
  15. Get excited and look at cover possibilities
  16. Read feedback from editor
  17. Cringe
  18. Rewrite
  19. Reread
  20. Tentatively send out to next set of readers

This is when it can go one of a few ways.

  • You find an agent, and get a fantastic publishing deal! Yay!
  • You find your mailbox cluttered with rejections and you decided to give up… Don’t!
  • You look at the possibility of Self/Indie Publishing, find a fantastically supportive community and find your success that way! Double Yay!

I’m at the post Editor feedback rewriting stage now. Thankfully there weren’t as many cringes as I thought there would be… It’s just crazy trying to find time to finish the rewrite!

Hopefully it won’t be long before I can announce something postive about this book!!!

#SoCS June 29/19 – For/Fore/Four

Linda’s #SoCS prompt this week:

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “for/fore/four.” Use one, use ’em all, use ’em any way you want. Bonus points for using all three. Enjoy!

Oh, Linda, you chose the best words to be honest for me to use today!

There is something at the forefront of my mind today, that involves the number four, well, actually, a one and a four.

Today is the day my Lil Man turns fourteen!

How did that happen?

From a teeny twinkle in my eye, through a painful journey to conceive and all the wonder, joy and frustration that accompanies bringing up a child, to the young man he is growning up to be now…

Fourteen, though? Really?

And the day he arrived was even more special, as he made his appearance on his granny’s birthday!

So that means it’s my mummy’s birthday too.

See.

A special day for us all.

So excuse me if I don’t reply too fast… I’ll be busy celebrating the birthdays of two very special people. One is with me, one isn’t, but they’ll both be in my thoughts all day.

Happy Birthday Lil Man and Mum!!!!

#SoCS June 8/19 – Life Balance

Linda’s #SoCS prompt this week is a repeat, but looks, likely to become a repeat offender, in a good way!

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “open book, point, write.” Pick up the closest book to you when you sit down to write your post. Close your eyes, open the book, and place your finger on the page. Whatever word or phrase your finger lands on, write about it. Enjoy!

I am currently reading a coupleof books, which is a bit of a shocker, as I am not am multi-book reader usually, but I have a novel my Karen McQuestion – From A Distant Start – on the go, and a positive thinking book, Unlearn, by Humble The Poet that I am dipping in and out of.

It was Humble’s book that came into my hand first…

… and the words my fingers came to rest upon were ‘balance in life’.

Kinda freaky, as I have been talking to my Hoppalong Hubby Dearest about balance recently. More accurately, work/life balance.

That’s a big thing, nowadays, isn’t it?

The pressure to do better, perform better, get things done perfectly, do it all better… it’s upon us all in some way.

And increasingly, you might see couples not really leading a couples life, but fleetingly meeting in the mornings, and hardly talking in the evenings, busy with work related things, and too tired to interact in more than the most basic of greetings and goodnights.

You hear of families who, even though they are traditional two parent families, find one parent, often the mother, feeling like a single parent, because, despite working herself, the other half is laden down with work pressures, and is barely able to make an evening parents evening, let alone help with the school run once in a while.

Bitmoji Image

There are those professionals who haven’t even got either of the above to balance out, as their work takes up so much time, that a social life, or time for themselves is so limited.

Bitmoji Image

Work/Life balance.

Afre we working to live or living to work?

  • I love my job. I truly do.
  • I love my family. More than my job.
  • I love my writing with a passion.
  • I love my friends.

Why should one have to give?

So, here’s what I do… I compartmentalise. And I find shortcuts!

The first hour of my day is devoted to getting things ready for everyone, then relaxing with a cuppa, watching the news and catching up with notifications and emails.

Yes, I am in work early, very early, by 7.45am. Yes, I can be still there at 5.45pm… but only on three days. The other two, I’m out by 4pm

During the day, I will take a break, but I will also make sure I am doing all that needs to be done to prepare for the rest of the week, to make my life easier.

I make sure that, apart from report writing, and the odd time I need to make resources, I bring no work home with me at all.

At home then, I am wife and mum. I’dd do cooking and housework. I’ll help with homework. I’ll nag (because all good wives do) and I’ll have fun with my family.

Then, once everyone is all set, my evening time is mine to choose what I do with it. Read, write, watch tv, iron (I do love a bit of steam pressing) whatever takes my fancy!

Bitmoji Image

I will arrange nights out with friends. I will go and see family. I will not let work tip me over the edge, even though it is easy to do.

We were discussing it as an opportunity may arise for Hoppalong, where he could go for a role which is more prestigious than his current one, but will involve more stress and pressure, and possibly more time. He compares himself to his MD who is literally on work mode 24/7.

You know, if it works for his MD then fine, but there is no need to be like that. There are always ways to balance things out.

Sure, when you start hight pressure jobs, the need is there to be a little more work, a little less life… but once you are settled, there is the chance to bring that balance back.
