Linda’s #SoCS prompt this week:
Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “preposition” Start your post with any preposition. Bonus points if you end with one too. Enjoy!
Near me, sits my daughter, Lil Princess, hurriedly doing homework.
Yes, it is the summer holidays, and she starts her new school in 10 days (EEEK!), yet still, she has homework.
I’d have thought that, considering they finished primary school, and were getting ready for a whole new chapter, in their education, that the kds would get a break. But no, don’t be silly.
And no break for kid, means no break for mummy either!
Not one, but three different pieces too!
- A book review – well that’s not too bad, considering she likes to read, and had already read some of the books on the recommended reading list. So a review of Wonder has been written.
- Maths – design a farm (?!?!) with fields containing animals and crops, but the catch is each crop or animal has a field that has a specific shape and plot area that you have to work out and adhere to… Yeah. That’s not a relaxing easy task… Believe me, I know! It’s what she’s battling with at the moment!
- Create a Solar System fact poster, with a list of 5 items that need to be included. We haven’t looked at that yet, but it’s pretty straight forward.
Still.
Homework. In the holidays.
I’m not convinced. And I’m a TEACHER!
When to kids get a chance to relax nowadays?
I’d much rather they were sent with a not from both schools, last and future, saying “Enjoy your break! You’ve worked so hard, and there is still plenty more of that work to come, so this holiday, enjoy your freedom! Read, meet friends, play outside. Then come back fresh and ready for the start of a new chapter!”
Is that too much to ask for?

Totally agree. It’s always go, go, go for kids and school (and sports) now. I remember when I was in 5th grade, I still remember my teacher telling us all to go home after school, go outside and just play until dinner. Kids need to relax and get away from structure.

They really so. And teachers jniwvthus, but still, this happens… There should be no homework policies for the big holidays!

Both of mine have summer assignments. Going into 8th grade was two books (one assigned, one their choice). Going into 9th grade was reading an assigned book and writing an alternate ending in the author’s voice. I gave my kids free reign this summer on when to work but started “encouraging” pretty hard in mid-July. Nobody wants to spend their last week of summer working!

It’s hard. I want to encourage her… And I did. She’d decide at 9.30pm that she wanted me to sit with her. When I’d be getting ready to chill. But she’s just got one bit left now…

Homework during holidays??? So the British school system needs reform, too. 😉
Don’t forget, you’ll have to tell us exactly, about your first week as a classroom dragon Lol. Have a beautiful weekend! Michael

Here they encourage reading a book along with enjoying summer break, depending on the grade level. Sometimes it’s undereducating or overeducating.

I understand that kids lose a lot over the summer break, but I wish they were allowed to enjoy the summer, I remember summer vacations as being so much fun, and there’s no other time in your life when you have that.

Ritu, I have never heard of kids getting homework assignments over the summer break. Then again, it’s been a loooong time since I’ve been in school. I think I would have cried if trips to the beach or to a friend’s house had been interrupted by math and solar systems. Kids shouldn’t be stressed by that in the waning days of their vacation, but it appears you already agree with that thought.

There is no homework for kids over the summer break over here. Most of all because it is the change between school years and often they get new teachers. Doesn’t make sense anyway. Perhaps they get something to do in the higher levels over breaks in fall, winter or spring. But nothing major. No, I don’t agree with homework for the kids during their summer break. That kind of stuff starts early enough when they are in their educations or study.

Against the tide she always swam,
No storm could ever change her course,
She was very tough, one of a kind,
She had left her tumultuous past far behind ..

Kids need to be able to totally relax from school in the holidays.

Don’t we all, Irene??? The worst thing is someone I know who’s child started there last year (they didn’t do this when my son started there three years back) said no one really looked at it anyway…
I was so tempted to say ‘leave it’ but then that doesn’t instill the right work ethic into her!

That is a lot of homework, given it is holidays. Michael has to write a book review [horror – he hates doing that] and Greg doesn’t have to do anything.
