Parents Evening – Every Teacher’s Nightmare! #MondayBlogs

Today I am about to embark on my first ever Parents Evening!

Yes, I’ve been teaching for a few years now, and I have the experience of talking one to one to parents, but in our nursery the parents meetings are held differently.

I have attended them as a parent, obviously, and on occasion I have been asked ot hang around to do some translations for Punjabi speaking parents, but never have I been the one to sit on the other side of the desk… never have I been the one that parents look to expectantly, for good reports of their child.

This year, being in one of the main school classes for two days a week qualifies me to have to attend the proper big event… two evenings where appointments have been made with the parents of our students, to discuss their progress.

Each child has a 10 minute slot – God help me, I find shutting up a problem, and now I have a time limit. I think I need a timer and buzzer to stop me over sharing!

It’ll be a long day for us, until gone 7 pm tonight, and a little shorter finishing at 6 pm tomorrow.

But this means that everything we would usually do at the end of the school day can’t get done, so after getting home, there will be a lot of tired teachers hurriedly marking books, and ensuring the next day’s preparation is done, before collapsing into bed.

What to eat? Well for the late one tonight, our dear Headteacher has arranged for food for us all to eat after it finishes.

I’m a little nervous.

It’s really hard to look a parent in the eye and tell them things they may not want to hear.

But it is a pleasure to give them positive feedback!

It’s tough to stay calm when parents try to tell you how to do your job.

Though it is wonderful for the ego when they say how much they enjoy coming to school to be in your class!

And you can guarantee that you will hear, several times, when you mention a child’s good behaviour in school – “Really? He/she’s a nightmare at home! Oh well, I’m glad he/she behaves here, anyway!”

Still, this is another task to tick off my Teacher’s Bucket List!

Wish me luck – and the strength to get through it!

Have a great Monday Peeps!

TGI Friday!

It’s finally here! Friday!

Actually, this week has sped by.

What with Halloween, and the school disco, we’ve had a few different things to spice up the week.

Coupled with the fact that we’re going to a fireworks display tonight, and that in class things have actually been pretty ‘good’ (said hesitantly!) it’s been rather lovely!

I did find out, however, that I will have an additional 30 names to get into my head, and 30 new little people to get to know… because I am switching from one class to another to cover a maternity leave… hmm, that will be fun! (Running count just for this year – 100 kids I have/had responsibility for!)

So, it just leaves a little space for me to say Happy Friday Peeps!

School Halloween Disco Fun!

It was the School disco today.

After the rushing around, having forgotten to set my alarm, I wasn’t sure if I’d have the energy, because it was not one, but two discos!

We have one for the younger children and one for the older ones.

Being a Reception teacher means my pupils were attending the first one, and my daughter, as an older pupil, was attending the second, so it meant another nearly 12 hours at school!

But it was fun. The kids enjoyed it, and I must admit that I had a bit of a blast too, dancing with all my babies!

Of course a Halloween disco is not complete without a bit of dressing up…  and I decided this year I would not go all witchy, but feline instead!

I promised to share my dressing up…

Here’s me, in all my filtered and unfiltered glory!

Happy Halloween!

Have a spooktacular day!

A Grown Up Evening! (With a recipe thrown in for Jeera Chicken Wings!)

Yesterday I spent the evening at my friend’s house.

Some of you may recall me mentioning my group of mummy friends, the Tootie Frooties!

Well, one of the yummy mummies has recently moved house and there have been a few of us who celebrated birthdays over the last two months. It was a get together to celebrate the new house, birthdays, and a great excuse to cook up a storm and enjoy each other’s company, despite coughs, colds, kids, and work the next day!

We were missing two Tootie Frooties!

We all brought drinks and a dish.

Me, being so grown up, opted for the Coco Pops Spoon… just because!

Most of us also brought the extra addition of kids!

One of the things we discussed over dinner was the fact that this night, though it didn’t involve going out to some fancy bar or club, was what we all preferred. A chilled evening with the music of our choice pulsing through the sound system, good food, good company, and the ease of being able to have the kids milling around, not worrying about babysitters. They were perfectly happy causing their own version of havoc, while we cackled like a coven of (rather glam) witches in the kitchen!

All in all, a pretty grown-up affair, don’t you think?

Oh, and here’s what I made!

Mine was Butter Jeera Chicken Wings!

What’s the recipe? Well, I’ll tell you all!

Now I cook by Andaaza. Please forgive me, but there are no amounts for the ingredients, as my mum uses andaaza. This basically is when you just know! It’s a skill I think many mothers hone over the years while cooking the family favourite dishes!

I used

20 pieces of chicken (wings)
Butter
Olive Oil
Cumin Seeds
Garlic
Ginger
Fresh red chillis
Salt
A Little Natural Yoghurt
Garam Masala
Lemon Juice

Honestly, it is so simple, and really tasty!

  • Add the butter and oil to a wok or large pan and allow to cook together. Both fats together stop each other from burning,
  • Once hot add around two teaspoons of cumin, ginger, garlic, chillis and salt. Allow to cook for a few minutes.
  • Add the chicken, stirring so all the pieces are coated with the spices.
  • Add a tablespoon of natural yoghurt to allow the chicken to keep its moistness.
  • When the chicken is almost cooked, add around two teaspoons of garam masala and a few squirts of lemon juice.
  • Allow the chicken to cook thoroughly.
  • Enjoy!

And I think everyone enjoyed!

I hope you enjoy too!

Happy Friday Peeps! I’m off to try and control my eating for the next week, to make up for the calorific content of my diet yesterday!
