Procrastination is sometimes a form of self-care, don’t you think?

I know it may seem like when we procrastinate, we are just putting off the inevitable, but sometimes, I think there is something inside us that makes us stop or not engage in a task because. we know, deep down, it isn’t the right time.

And I, as the Queen of Procrastination, fully endorse a bout of procrastinating. It can work wonders in certain situations. I know, for me, that when I am dithering about writing, it is not laziness but my mind figuring something out before letting my creative brain get carried away…

One-Liner Wednesday – Anticipation

A little background… my brother and his family are coming over from Finland for a couple of days to stay with us, and I am beyond excited to see them all, but especially my nephews, who I haven’t met for four years. My youngest nephew wasn’t even one when I held him last… 🙏🏽💛🥰

Chai And A Chat #223 #ChaiAndAChat

Hello there! I was going to say I’m sorry for being late, but then I realised that it’s a deadline only imposed upon myself by me, so no apology is needed! It’s half term this week, and I have spent the weekend trying to relax before a fun but busy week… So let’s get started!

I have tea and cake accompanying me. What is your tipple of choice?

  • If we were having chai, I’d start by talking about school. The last week of this half term. That means we are officially halfway through the academic year. Where does the time go? Even though this is one of the shortest terms, it felt like forever. I think it probably has something. todo with Christmas break finishing so soon after New Year when you’ve probably had a really busy two weeks, then full-on school, when you are still exhausted… Anyway. it went well. It was Children’s Mental Health week. We had. special yoga session, then little activities and mindfulness breathing to practice, as well as positive affirmations. On Thursday, the older children came in for half an hour and spent time reading with the children, which was lovely. The children in Year 6 right now were my first-ever Nursery class, and to see some of them, at 10-11, already taller than me, is rather a wild sensation! On Friday, we had Dress to Express day. where the children could wear what they wanted or choose a colour to wear that showed how they feel. We had a great circle time in the class I was with that day, talking about what they wore and why giving them a chance to use their communication skills to let us know how they felt. It was precious.
  • If we were having chai, I’d tell you that our Wellbeing champions in school (who are there to look after the staff) held a cuppa, cake and chat after school. We all brought in cakes and nibbles and had a lovely hour or so, chilling out and not thinking about work for a little while.
  • If we were having chai, I’d say that we were definitely caked out this week at home too. It was my Brother in Law’s birthday last week, but he was away, and on Wednesday, it was Hubby Dearest and Mum in Law’s birthday, so we had a cake-fest on Wednesday evening! (And we still have two birthdays to go, yet…)
  • If we were having chai, I’d tell you that once Friday came, I was pooped. I spent most of the weekend chilling out, with. a book and a lot of food, as well as bingeing. a few series/films!
  • If we were having chai, I’d mention that seeing as it is Lil Princess’s birthday the day we go back to school, we had a few birthday treats for her too since she has been having quite a tough time. The first was on Saturday when she got her hair done. It’s the first time she has had any sort of colour, and it looks so lovely. I can’t believe how grown up she looks!
  • If we were having chai, I would give you a snippet of Sonu Singh! I think he senses I am tired. On Sunday, I lay on my bed with my planning notebook. He promptly sat on it and stared at the TV as if to say, “No, Mummy, you aren’t working now. Watch TV. Switch off!” So I did! We watched Your Place or Mine on Netflix, as well as the first part of season 4 of the series You. Very good! I also watched a Bollywood film called XL, about how plus size is viewed so negatively in India, and championing two strong-willed larger women. Loved it!

This week will pass in a flash, I know it. I have lots to look forward to, with a Society of Authors meeting a little later today, then Valentine’s Day, which will probably be taken up doing a big tidy up and house clean, since my Finndian family are coming to visit for a few days! I cannot explain how excited I am! Not sure what the weekend will hold, but hopefully a couple of days of relaxation before we start back in school!

Spidey’s Serene Sunday #414 – Smile

What a beautiful quote, Spidey!

I’m all about the smile. That is me.

When I started uni, before we all got to know one another, I was known as ‘that smiley curly-haired girl from Birmingham’.

And, even now, you will rarely see me without a smile on my face. It may be small and contemplative or wide and manic as I navigate through a crazy day with the kids at school, but it is ever-present.

If you see me without one, you know that Ritu is broken, that day. That is very rare.

You see, I firmly believe that just the act of smiling can change the way your emotions are playing out in your mind. You can alter how you feel to a more positive direction with a smile.

And then there is the rest of the world.

I’ve always got a smile for others.

It is funny to see how strangers react, though.

A smile is the most natural form of communication, yet some people think you are a lunatic for smiling at them.

I’m not talking about a big toothy grin beaming its way to them, but just a small upturn of the lips. An acknowledgement, if you will.

A smile has started all manner of little connections in my life.

My favourite one is with John, an older gentleman. As I navigated the aisles in Asda one Saturday morning after dropping Lil Man at his football training many years ago, I passed the same faces as we all crossed each other’s paths multiple times. I’d smile if there was eye contact, but most of the time, most people’s eyes were either scanning shelves or looking down, just getting on with their shopping.

There was one man who beamed back at me every time. And after the third or fourth time, he stopped me. “Excuse me,” he said. “I hope you don’t mind me saying this, but thank you for the smiles. Nowadays, people don’t have the time or inclination to smile, and it makes a pleasant change.”

We would pass each other every Saturday for many months and always stop at some place for a chat. I learned about his adult children and wife, and he asked about my family. He met the kids on the odd shopping trip. One day, he said, “I have something for you!” He pulled out an old photo of a church and said, “You must show this to your son. This was his original school around 400 years ago!”

He asked how to send it to me, so I could show Lil Man. So we ended up Facebook friends, too! Over the next year or so, we would bump into one another and have a catch-up. I learned about his wife being ill, and he supported my blog and book release, too.

Obviously, Covid hit. Shopping trips were few and far between, but we still passed the odd message on Facebook. He lost his wife and has had bouts of illness, but we still stay in touch.

That’s the power of a smile.

#SoCS Feb. 11, 2023 – Heart

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “heart.” Use it any way you like. Have fun!

An apt one, Linda, since that heart day is creeping upon us all.

Yes, it’s commercialised, but you can hardly ignore it as the shops are interspersed with red and pink merchandise.

Cards, chocolates, fluffy toys, and silly/cute/sexy gifts that you would probably never use.

But, then again, sometimes it’s good to remind yourself of those you love and to show them a little appreciation.

Sure, it should be a daily thing, but let’s be honest. In the craziness that is life, it is easy to forget sometimes.

Just as it is easy to forget to love yourself, too.

So when heart day arrives, on Tuesday, along with anything you decide to gift to your loved one, remember that you need a reminder from yourself too.

As an aside, I got my first valentine in school yesterday. A cute little bag of sweets and a note from our head.

And in the afternoon, I received a special present from one of my pupils amidst a sea of notes from others with hearts on them for me. (I promise, I wasn’t talking about hearts, but it was Dress to Express Day – a part of Children’s Mental Health Week – and all the children were being extremely expressive!) He urged me to open it but not to show the others.

It said, “I love yuo,” (as spelt by my 5-year-old pupil).

I melted just a little.

What a way to end the term!
