Deeper #writephoto

Sue’s #WritePhoto Prompt:

It was mere seconds, but as I fell, it felt like time had slowed down.

I wondered how such beauty could be present at a time where my mind held thoughts not remotely beautiful.

The russets and golds on the leaves of the branch sticking out of the rocks.

The vibrant green of the plants surrounding it.

The sun, bouncing off the light stone of the wall.

The ripples creating their own music that grew louder as I drew closer to the water.

Then, the splash, followed by muffled sounds, as I sunk deeper into the water.

Tendrils from the underwater foliage threatened to wrap themselves around my limbs, but I fought them off.

Bubbles escaped my mouth as my body floated upwards, like an air-filled buoy.

I gasped for breath as my face broke the surface.

Invigorated, I swam to the edge and clambered out, soaking, but content.

It was as if I needed that shock to the system, to realise that, really, my life wasn’t so bad.

February 4: Flash Fiction Challenge – Finding Your Prince Charming

The Carrot Ranch Prompt, this week:

February 4, 2021, prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less) write a story that features a substitution. How might a character or situation be impacted by a stand-in? Bonus points for fairy tale elements. Go where the prompt leads.

Finding Your Prince Charming

Once upon a time, there was a beautiful Princess, awaiting her Prince Charming.
After reading the Find Your Prince self-help book, she tried the Sleeping Beauty, the Snow White, and even the Cinderella.
 Nothing.
Eventually, she decided to use her long hair as she attempted the Rapunzel.
Sitting in her tower, with her golden plait fluttering out of the window, she felt a tug.
“Yes! Finally, my Prince is coming!”
More pulling followed by the grunt of her beloved-to-be as he hoisted himself up.
Alas, no Prince, just the toothless Palace window cleaner!
No happily ever after, just yet!

January 14: Flash Fiction Challenge – World Book Drag

Charli’s Carrot Ranch Flash Fiction Challenge:

January 14, 2020, prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less), write a story about dressing up. It can be a child or another character. Be playful or go where the prompt leads!

World Book Drag

“But I don’t wanna!”

Little feed stomp, but I’ll be damned if my hard work won’t be worn today.

World Book Day.

The bane of every parent’s life.

I’ve been planning this costume since last year, after seeing the spectacular costume Jenny Harris-Smythe’s mother made for her daughter last year.

She was dining off her win for months!

So, I’m sorry, but today you WILL be wearing this, because I say so.

I don’t care if you think you look silly, and no, you can’t be Captain America! Ready-made costumes. Pah!

The prize will be mine!

Sorry, yes, yours…

FRIDAY FICTION with RONOVAN WRITES Prompt Challenge Holiday Special – Santa’s Cookies

Ronovan is back with his Friday Fiction Prompts, and so, here I am, jumping on the first one in a while!

Prompt for Challenge

  • ‘Santa arrives at the home of Harry Potter where the Potter children have left cookies and milk for Santa to eat. He does. What happens next?’ REQUIRED
  • Word Count is 500 words or lessREQUIRED

Santa’s Cookies

After checking his list, Santa rummaged around in his sack and located the presents for the Potter children. Setting them under the tree, he made his way back to the fireplace, ready to leave, when he noticed the snacks.

“Now, this looks rather interesting.” Santa removed his soot-covered mask, dislodging a few black particles, before smoothing his snow-white beard.

A hand-written note accompanied the plates and glass.

 Deer Santa,

We howp yoo hav a gud trip arownd the world toniyt.
We hav been veri gud this yeer.
Mummy sez my spelling is getting beter, but my spells are perfec.
Howp you lyk the cukiys and caruts.

 Love from
Teddy and lily and albus and james
(but mostly Teddy bcos I mayd the cukiys )

“Milk and cookies, as usual, but these cookies seem to have a certain glow about them.” He took a bite, the biscuit melting in his mouth. It wasn’t long before he’d emptied the plate, and drained the glass of milk, letting out a small belch, after.

Santa rubbed his belly and smiled at the other small plate, which displayed carrots for the reindeer. Emptying them into his pocket, he popped his mask back on and whooshed back up the chimney.

The reindeer stood patiently on the roof. Santa felt in his pockets and found the carrots, speedily offering them to the waiting animals, who snuffled them up within seconds.

He settled into the sleigh, and with a shake of the reins, the sleigh and Santa disappeared into the night.

The scuffling noise from above stopped, and little Teddy stepped out from behind the curtains.

“Wow! I really did get to see Santa! The others won’t believe me. They never do. But I did. I saw him. And he read my letter and ate all my cookies. I do hope my spells worked. I’d hate for Christmas to come to a halt because Santa ended up with the virus. The cookies and carrots were magic, so they don’t get sick. Well, I hope they were, anyway.”

He glanced at the pile of presents left behind and smiled.

“I’ve definitely been a good boy this year.”

I’m not a HP fan, so I hope I did okay with this one!

December 10: Flash Fiction Challenge – Surprise!

Charli’s Carrot Ranch 99-word flash fiction challenge:

December 10, 2020, prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less), write a story about something a character never dreamed would happen. The situation can be fortuitous, funny, or disappointing. Go where the prompt leads!

Sasha sat down at the nearest table. There was no space closer to the front, but she was more than happy with that.

Being the centre of attention was not her thing. In fact, she wouldn’t have even been here at all,  if it wasn’t for her boss, insisting she showed up. Corporate events were the worst kind of evil, and business awards, even more so.

Swirling the champagne in her flute around, she tuned into the speaker’s voice.

“And the award for the most loyal employee goes to…. Sasha Smith!”

Faces turned her way.

She dropped her glass.
