Life In The Nursery World

I realise that I haven’t really mentioned work much, considering it is only a few days to our first half term vacation.

Besides being tired, I have been settling Lil Man into his new school and dealing with secondary homework, learning how to remember which books or sports kit is needed on each day, and generally learning to let go…

It hasn’t helped the last week, where the whole ‘Killer-Clown’ craze has gone wild on Social Media, so the kids are showing each other messages and photos, and spreading stories of impending clown visits to schools. Lil Man finds it hard to sleep, worrying about it. But on the flip side, he wants to be strong enough to fight his corner, if he was to be apprehended by a curly haired joker…

So, back to my daily grind…

If last year was a Baptism of Fire, with some real tough characters, this year is almost the flip-reverse!

Now, I’m not saying I am teaching a whole class of advanced angels who can all read and write already, and have the social skills of adults, but there is a world of difference between the two cohorts of children!

Yes, we have many with language barriers, from Punjabi to Hindi, Polish to Slovakian, Russian and Latvian, Greek and Albanian, and the odd English speaker too!

Yes, there is the strong chance of a couple of children with special needs, ADHD or Speech impediments,

Yes, there are some children with behaviour issues, those who are not used to sharing, or anyone saying no to them.

But they are manageable!

They have their quirks too. I have one who comes up and randomly kisses whatever part of the body he sees, so far kisses have graced my knee, shoulder, bosom and even my bum!

We have had criers, who could sob, or wail for 2 hours, giving us headaches, then stop, as if a switch flicked, leaving us wondering what went on!

Nappy-gate is still here, we have a serial pooper, who has gone from the nappy to little slips in his new pants. There is the one whose mummy can’t bear him to have an accident, so sends him in nappies, then asks us to take it off… Bless him, he is so good at going toilet, oh ye mother of little faith! And we have already trained one,who now proudly announces she needs a “widdle”!

Talking of the toilet, and down ‘below’, I am intrigued as to what conversations may be like in some households. Maybe I am wrong, but when referring to our ‘bits and pieces’, we use soft terms, you know, willy, and winky, or pom-pom and floof…

The other day one of my little 3-year-olds came up to me and told me her f*nny was hurting! And today (forgive me, bad teacher, but I really wanted to laugh!) one of my little charges needed the loo, after wriggling around on the carpet, trying to hold it in. I followed him, to make sure he was ok. I did call after him, to ask and he answered “I’m just getting my d*ck out!” Said in such a matter of fact way, I didn’t know what to say!

Suffice to say, I haven’t been driven to drink so far this term, an improvement on last year!

Back to Skool

Oh yes…

Can I just let you youngsters know that us teachers have the same feeling of doom when we come back after a school holiday?

We don’t enjoy torturing you with hard work and assessment… but it’s our job…

You know what, that sounds really negative! It’s not all doom! It is lovely to have that feeling of freedom for a few weeks, not having to be at school before 8am, marking, assessing, effectively labelling children for reporting purposes. that bit is really gloomy.

But personally, when I start a new school year, there is an extra spring in my step.

With Nursery, you are catching those children right at the very beginning of their educational career, and though I don’t know what they’ll be like, I look forward to the challenges that these unknown entities bring!

Last year, my first academic year as a teacher, I started with a true baptism of fire. With language barriers, social skills below expectations, behaviour problems and anger management issues it was a tough year, and that isn’t including the Special Educational Needs children and Children in Care either!

This year, I started on a positive note. I had met all the children already, and there was no one who was flagged up immediately as someone who would possibly be a problem child… ish. (Well there has to be some, doesn’t there!)

So this year we have 3 spaces still, which I am sure will get filled pretty soon.

The remaining lovelies are 26% English , 41% Punjabi speaking and 33% other languages, from Slovak, to Russian, Polish to Greek, Albanian to Kosovan!

One child is partially deaf. One appears to have slight aggression issues, one is a ‘bleeder’ which means if he bleeds, and we can’t stem it, we need an Ambulance ASAP! One with kidney issues, a few who speak NO English, and the odd nappy thrown in too!

A wonderful mix!

Yesterday we had them in with parents for an hour as many have never left their mums or dads, and today was their first day trying to be without their parents, for just an hour again.

3 criers/screamers in the morning. Not bad for 19 kids to be honest! We are down one at the moment, as he is on holiday still!

2 criers in the afternoon, out of 15. Two were unwell (already?!) so hadn’t come in, but that’s to be expected.

And to be honest, most of them were amazing! They independently went about their playing, and exploring, and a few started to get a tiny bit wobbly near the end of the hour, looking for their carers, but on the whole, they did GREAT!

It’s too early to say yet, but all in all, it wasn’t bad.

The only blot on my horizon was that I woke with a pain in my knee (recurring injury from a few years back – thanks Sonu Singh!) which actually got really bad by 9.30am. So much so I was holding on to things to walk because I couldn’t put weight on it!

But I soldiered on, and got to the end of the day!

Honestly, right now, I am looking forward to this year. I have a great team by my side, and we even have a new addition too, who is to be with us every day, so here’s hoping we can give these kids a really great start to their education, and make them enjoy nursery and love learning, so when it’s time for Big School for them next year, they are WAAAAY prepared!

Yesterday Dandelions…

..today a rose!

My little friend brought me this today!

His mum said he comes to nursery, and as he walks, he looks for flowers to pick for his ‘Teecha’!

So sweet! It had an amazing scent too!

It’s The Little Things…

It has been nearly a year since this classful of kids and I started our journey together, and things have been good at times, and really rough at others.

They still aren’t easy, by any means, but I am pretty proud to think I have nearly managed my first academic year, with a pretty hard bunch of children… A baptism of fire, it has definitely been!

But it truly is the little things… nearly 9 months ago, I had a particular child who was REALLY hard to deal with. He spat, kicked, bit me, and swore (at 3 years of age). I remember writing about him here.

This week, however, for the 3 days he came in, he ran into the classroom and gave me a flower! Ok, they were dandelions and weeds, but still… how sweet!

Here they are, drying!

I seem to have a habit of picking up little friends in my classes!

Then there are other ‘little things’ I’d rather not have to worry about, from school…

No, I don’t have them, thank God, (I got my mother in law to check me like a monkey chimp being nitpicked by its mother!) but a lovely little girl in my class has them, and she is another one who seems to have an affection for me, and she is always cuddling up close to me!

Not quite the gift I would cherish, so I have taken preventative measures!!!!

Teaching is such fun!

It’s been a busy week in nursery land, Christmas-ifying the classroom!
Here is the tree as decorated by the kids!

Here is our window advent calendar. The kids created the stained glass window pictures, and now they are uncovering them, one at a time.
