Snowed Under…Not Literally! #MondayBlogs

OMG! I only wish it was real snow that was causing me stress! But if it had been, it wouldn’t be stress, I’d be celebrating a snow day!

SO much going on this week, and the next few, in the run up to Christmas!

I have observations at school, a Toy sale to co-ordinate with my colleague and School councillors, Governors meeting, progress grids to complete, and to top it off ( a nice thing!) a trip to the folks to see them!

This is on top of the usual two classes I teach and family life…

I was even at a course on SATURDAY!

I think the pressure of what is to come resulted in me being rather unwell yesterday with an epic migraine too…

But I am up as usual, and feeling better now!

I just needed sleep and time to recuperate my poor overworked brain!

Seriously Peeps, if you get to that stage, and you have a bad headache/migraine/cold, listen to your body and shut down for a while.

It is telling you that you need rest!

Now it hasn’t miraculously made all the issues go away, but I am rested enough that I can put things into perspective!

So, have  great Monday all! Off to tackle the first of the tasks!

What is ‘Family’? #ThrowbackThursday

An old post I wrote a while back that I felt like giving an airing to!

Over my life time I’ve seen many different types of family, and I’m lucky to be part of a huge, crazy parivaar (Punjabi for family) where there is no lack of love and laughter. But where you get a great amount of people, there are always going to be fallings out, and that one person, or maybe more, that you cant stand!

I think we can all relate to that!

As I said, I have been blessed with this gigantic extended family, and they took up most of my childhood,  every weekend we were together, be it at a wedding, a party, or just at each other’s houses for dinner.  It was character building to say the least, I was the youngest girl cousin on my Pops side out of a good 20, or so, cousins so was spoilt by many, but there were the odd ones who may not have liked the attention that being the youngest afforded me… still, I was brought up well, and wouldn’t make a fuss, I just got on with life.   Then on the flip side, I was the oldest grand child on my Mum’s side, so I had a different stature there!  The ‘Big Sister’ role!

But it’s my immediate family who I will always be thankful for.  A father who did everything for us, to provide us with a stable upbringing, and still catering for the other families needs. A mother who was there for us, at every step of our growing up, she didn’t even follow her chosen career path, choosing to be a full time mum to us, supporting us, helping us, bringing us up when we were down, grounding us when we were too big for our boots. A brother who was the biggest irritant of my life for the first 15 years, but then morphed into one of the most trusted individuals in my life. Then beyond, his wife, my sister-in-law, who is the sweetest person I know, who has also moulded the raw man that was my brother into a most amazing husband, and fantastic father too! And not forgetting my precious little bundle of laughs, my baby nephew!

Talking of husbands, around 14 years ago, I suddenly had a new branch grow onto my family tree, and I acquired new parents, another brother, and another whole new extended family, through my husband!

Hubby Dearest, well he is my rock, and thanks to him  (and a little bit of me) we created our own family, with the additions of Lil Man, and Lil Princess, and the ability to love unconditionally grew considerably in both of us. These two little people, here on Earth because of us, and looking up to us to nurture them, and hopefully encourage them to grow into strong, independent individuals with heart.

But is that all family is? Blood ties, and marriage?

I don’t think so, personally.

I seem to have little pockets of ‘family’ elsewhere in my life, my school ‘family’, my university ‘family’, my work ‘family’, my friends ‘family’, my WordPress Blog ‘family’…

Each of these groups of people have as much of a profound effect on my daily life, as my real family do, in their own way. They are all as important to me, and as essential to me being who I am today, as my parents were. The experiences I have shared with them over the years have also shaped me as a person, and made me the Ritu you see before you.

So, what is ‘family’ to me?

I think the true definition of family is those people who help to shape you as the individual you are today.

Written in response to RonovanWrites #BeWow writing initative.

But I Smile Anyway...

They keep me sane!

You know when you are swallowed whole by family?
Your individuality disappears as you are swallowed with a new identity?
You are no longer “you’, instead you are someone’s wife, someone’s daughter in-law, and eventually someone’s mum?
Well, OK, I know not everyone feels this, but there are a lot of Indian women who have found themselves in that position.
And as for motherhood being all consuming, that covers a much wider range of women.

After I had Lil Man, I took a year out, and then we were in a position that I could reduce my hours, and work part-time. This meant squeezing all I needed to do in 3 hours. It didn’t leave much time for socialising. I worked, quick chats, then left to go home to be mummy again.

Again, another year out when Lil Princess arrived, but this time the office had decided, rather thoughtlessly, to move location, where it just wasn’t feasible to do part-time. Luckily, with my in-laws support with the children, I was able to go back full-time, and realised that, along with the money being better, my sanity was being restored! I was no longer just mummy, but I was me again. Those hours between 10am and 6pm didn’t revolve around the children or conversations about the children, naps, feeding, nappies, and family, but I could talk about whatever I wanted, without interruptions. I could swear if I wanted!

Around the kids and family I needed to be sane, strict, sensible, controlled, with a smidgin of fun thrown in. Now I had whole days where I could almost pretend I wasn’t a parent, until 6.30-7pm… Then I would have the rush of being mummy intensivly for an hour or so, then being the good daughter-in-law and wife before bed, only to get up and do the same the next day. Not so great.

Now, being in school I believe I have it even better. I work school hours, so have plenty of time with my  family, and the hours at school, I am not the kids mum, unless there is a problem, which isn’t often. I am Ritu. (Or Mrs Bhathal to the kids). I have a wonderful relationship with my colleagues, the conversations behind the staffroom door can be hilarious! If I’ve had enough at home, I can forget it and enjoy my day at work, or garner the perspective of someone unassociated with the family.

I feel I finally have my sanity back. I have my individuality back. I am me again. And I wouldn’t be able to say that without the people I work with. They accept me for me, who I am, and the children at school too. They think (know) I’m a little loopy, and I love that!

I love being a wife and mother. There is no greater blessing but it’s good to know that that isn’t all I am. There is something else that is important, and that is me being me.

Bump!

Yup, I was back at school last week for training, days, but that wasn’t real… no, that was a peaceful school environment, with no children around… but as of tomorrow, term starts.

My children start a new era in their own lives. Lil Princess is no longer an infant, and will be a Junior now! And Lil Man starts Year 6, his last year in primary school! I can’t believe that… where did the time go? Before I know it, both of my kids will be in secondary school!

And I get to meet my new classes in Nursery officially tomorrow.  It’s going to be a set of taster sessions this week, an hour or so, firstly with their parents, to settle them in, then we go in full on. Yes I have met them before, one on one, but this will be different, as they are actually starting… some children literally turned 3 at the end of August, so they will be teeny weenies!

I am anticipating plenty of blogger fodder from this, so I hope you will get to enjoy my experiences too!

Have a great start to the week everyone!

I’m definitely off to bed now for an early night!!!!!

A little update again!

So week  2 in the teaching world was great and ended with a high, as I had a company called ZooLabs visit the nursery twice, so each of the sessions of children could see what they were going to do, and boy did they all enjoy themselves!

Zoolabs are a science based educational company that do workshops around schools on various topics, but the main thing is they bring creatures, and mini beasts to the children!

We met Colin the cockroach, Sonny the Snake, Rosie and Phyllis the tarantulas, Tick and Tock the Rat sisters, Milo the millipede, Henry the Giant African Land Snail, to name but a few!

It was so delightful to see the children’s reactions to the animals, and they were so brave, and confident to touch, or hold creatures, and ask lots of questions!

This week, I am out for the week at another school.  Remember my Return to Teach Course? Well I am still completing that, as even though I have my job, I can’t waste the money we spent on it! So I am doing a placement, and it is at a small village school, very different to my own, where we have a large intake of children, it’s in the middle of a busy multicultural town, 49% EAL, which means children of other language. This school has, perhaps 2 children regarded as EAL, and is half the size.

But I have been given a warm welcome, and the children in the class where I will be based are lovely! I have already had a declaration of love, and many running hugs, where I nearly lost my balance! Oh its a good thing I love children so much!!!

2 nights of Single Parenthood, as hubby Dearest is away for work, and I am missing him so much, though, I seem to have got an awful lot done over these 2 evenings! Including scheduling lots of posts!

How has your week/weekend been so far?
