Poor Lil (Big) Fishy!

A few years back, we used to have a fish tank. Two actually.

A cold water tank with goldfish and a tropical tank which we actually inherited from Hubby Dearest’s cousins.

It was so soothing to sit and watch them swimming around, but slowly, the work of looking after two tanks, a furbaby and the family took its toll.

The goldfish died and I secreted the tank in the shed.

The tropical tank became like a ghost tank, as, rather than replace each tragedy that was inevitable in fish tanks, we let it run down until it was finally empty…

But we missed the fish.

Hubby Dearest would love to get his parents more involved in looking after Sonu Singh or even getting a cat or dog themselves, but they are so not interested!

So one day he picked up the old goldfish tank, and set it up in their house, complete with two ornamental goldfish. One white and one golden.

Mum in Law was not best pleased, but she took to the looking after routine and was happy to have something little to look after, and the kids loved to feed the fish and watch them swimming around.

They have never been given names, though!

Today, it struck me how much Mum actually loves those fish.

We spent the evening with them, and after a time mum asked me to check the fish. The big one, the white one, was spending increasing time laying at the bottom of the tank, and the gold one would apparently go and check on it after a while, sometimes even laying on it.

I hate to say it but it looks like time is running out for Big White… It looks like old age, and possibly too much food has finally caught up with him…

When we first got him, he would chase the other fish, and eat all the food before Goldy got a chance. Now, three years later, that same Goldy is checking up on his old friend…

It seems to me that we will have to find a replacement for Big White… Mum is so concerned, it is touching to see.

But I don’t think that she has been convinced to get another baby of the four-legged furry kind!

Landan Tahn! A Snapshot of Our Little Break

Though you may not have guessed it, or missed me (since I still managed to keep my presence on here!) I have just arrived back from a lovely two-day break in London.

We’ve had a tough few weeks with work and life stuff, and all needed a break from these four walls, so as it was the children’s (and my) half term break, we rented an apartment in Canary Wharf for two nights.

An apartment is perfect when you have a family. Yes, room service is wonderful, but at least you have space to yourselves, access to a kitchen to cater for those fussy eaters, and more than one bathroom! Canary Wharf is a good location as we could drive in and not worry about the Congestion charge, then park up in the apartment for a minimal fee, and use the Tube to go in and out of Central London itself.

The apartment was pretty cool!

We were right on the riverside too, so the view was good. If you looked out, you could see the O2 (Millenium Dome) too!

We did a little Tesco shop, and grabbed lunch, then after an afternoon siesta, we jumped on the tube to Picadilly Circus. I love the West End! Had it been purely my choice, we would have caught a theatre show too, but not everyone is as into the arts as me!

The view at dusk near our apartment was so pretty! We saw the famous Eros statue, and the great scaffolded corner is where usually you’d see the bright lights of Picadilly, but they are shut (for the first time in, like, a bajillion years!) for refurbishment.

20170216_182552We were thinking of popping into Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Exhibition, where they had a Peculiar Happenings special exhibition, but at £80 for us all, it felt a little steep!

The Square, Leicester Square, brings back memories of our university life, and all the nights out we had here! Obviously, we couldn’t drag the kids to a club, but the general feel of the place is something all can enjoy!

The street artists were there, and the buskers too!

Then we had to stop off at M & M World… naturally!

We had dinner in TGI Fridays (even though it was Thursday!) and then headed home, but not before I could check on the horses!

We got back and chilled together to watch a film on TV before heading to bed rather late.

20170216_222538

A little drink to accompany the film!

The idea was to get up early and maybe go swimming or take in a museum or two…

Firstly, the late night meant no one wanted to get up, and secondly, as some of you already know, I had some sad news regarding the passing of my cousin. My mood wasn’t in it initially.

20170217_110830

We just relaxed at the apartment, until the rest of the family woke, and after lunch, we popped back into the West End, but not before a visit to the iconic toy store Hamleys!

20170217_164225

And a stroll down Carnaby Street!

There we found this little store which Lil Man described as a ‘Kitchen equivalent of Smiggle! Have you been to Smiggle? It’s an overpriced stationary store, very kitsch and all that, but secretly I love it… because stationary is my downfall!

20170217_173633

The kids were starting to flag, as was Hubby Dearest, so we headed to China Town for dinner.

We ate at Wong Kei’s.

Have you heard of Wong Kei’s? It’s kind of an infamous Chinese restaurant. No frills, fantastic food, 4 floors which are usually always packed, and the customer service is to die for!

Who am I kidding? It is actually famous for its great food, and rude staff! They are hilarious! I have been several times in my life, and when I was at University, the first time we went, a waiter served us, never cracking a smile (and considering there were 10 attractive young ladies there, that was hard work!) until the end when we paid our bill! He piped up, as he handed the receipt to us, ” And I hope I never see you again!” and beamed at us!

Since then we have been served by staff who didn’t speak the whole time we were there, just using hand gestures, and we’ve been told off for requesting a spoon or fork to eat with…D’oh, that’s why the chopsticks are there, dummy!

The kids have been twice with us, and it was their request to go again, and we are but their humble servants, so off we went to Wong Kei’s!

After a very filling and tasty dinner, we went back to our apartment, and took in another family film before a slightly earlier night!

It was a 10.30am check out so by 11 am we were back home. The washing machine has been on, shopping done, homework sorted… now just one more day until school starts again…

I need another week off!

( I had so many more photos, but as you know, if the kids are in them, I don’t use them! But suffice to say, all enjoyed themselves !)

Sadness #Loveuary day 17.1

I know it’s the month of love.

Love is there whether someone is  with you or not. It may be distance that keeps you apart. It may be something more… like death.

Just because a soul departs from this world, it doesn’t mean that we stop loving them.

This morning I was greeted by the news that one of my cousin brothers had passed away. He was a gentle soul, a wonderful person. A supportive father and loving grandad.

He’s been holding on by a string for a few days… but he slipped away this morning.

I’m hurting. I’m sad. But I’m not crying. He wouldn’t have wanted that.  My memories of him will live in my mind until it’s my time to go. The stories I tell of him will ensure he lives on in my children too.

I may feel down, but thinking of him will always bring a smile on my face.

Loss – a Tanka

The sadness grows deep
You left a gap hard to fill
Sleep tight big brother
Our love for you will remain
Though you walk with us no more

Day 17 #Loveuary ❤ What Does Love Mean to Kids

loveuary

I asked my children what love meant, and both of them, at separate times, mad faces at me, and went “Yuck!”

Typical reactions for an 11 and 9-year-old! Love = boys/girls = kissing. Of course, that’s ‘yuck’ to them!

After a little more explanation, the best we came up with was this;

Lil Man

“There is family and romantic love. That’s it. When you care for someone.”

Lil Princess

“Love is spending time with family, and friendship.”

Then my mum called me the other day. She has been having a proper clear out at my family home, and she found some cards, and letters that I had written to her and Pops, at a young age, around 7 or 8 I think. There was even a typed note! And they had lots about love for your parents within them, so I guess what I thought of some kind of love as a child. I thought they would be apt to share with you here!

The first picture says “I’ll never forget you. I will always love you mum.”
The second shows my Ritu and co trademark! Motherly Messages!
Inside was the following message.

img-20170212-wa0006.jpg

To my dearest mummy
I love you mum
I love you so
In the mother’s competition
You’re the best in the row
But there’s one thing
I’d like to say
You’ll find love from me
Any day
Happy Mothers day
Put your feet up
Many kisses and even more love
From your best daughter
Ritu
xxx
(It’s your special day not ours so rest yourself!)

See, a poet from a young age!

And then there was this one…

img-20170212-wa0011.jpg

To the best parents ever,
The best advice comes from#When you are in dire need of advice, who does it come from. It comes from the best advice givers, your mummy and daddy.
This is something that I believe.
Love Ritu
PS I would never wish for any other parents in my life as I love you both with the whole of my heart and I hope you also love me truly.
I LOVE YOU

Aw, the innocent love of children! Mind you I still feel this love for my dear parents! ❤

Day 4 #Loveuary❤ – Sibling Love

loveuary

It’s not always immediate, this sibling love.

I know that in mine and my brother’s case, we went through many ups and downs on our journey to become as close as we have.

I truly love my brother, I do.

But when we were growing up, it was a different story!

Boys were smelly, mean and nasty, and that brother of mine was no exception!

He was moody, and such a pain, always wanting whatever I had, running around the house like a loony, pretending to be a gun-wielding soldier and scaring me with creepy crawlies! (Seriously, one time he decided it would be hilarious to capture some daddy long legs in an empty cotton bud container, one with a see-through lid. He spent a whole evening chasing after me with it! Did I say I love my brother?!)

But on the flip side, when we were in any situation where either of us were threatened, we’d step up, and be there for each other! Once he was playing with some of our cousins, and I was sat in a room nearby. I heard him being picked on and the big sis blood in me began to boil. I stormed out and confronted these cousins of ours… (they were real tough nuts! Softies now, but pretty crazy as children!) I threatened to punch one of them in the mouth if he said anything to my brother. He tried me, and before I knew it there was a boy standing in front of me with blood pouring from his mouth! He ran in crying to his mum, who didn’t believe him at all! How could Ritu even do that? It was unbelievable! (Phew!)

Growing up, we became separated location wise, as he went to boarding school, and then I went to university, but that distance did make the heart grow fonder, and we became extremely close.  He would ask me advice on girlfriends, and I introduced him to my Hubby Dearest (then boyfriend!) before anyone else in the family!

Now he’s sat in another country, living his life with a beautiful wife and two-year-old son. We are still, so far away from one another, but our hearts are so close together.

Brother:
Hell bent on causing you strife
But truly a support for life!
