Explaining Storm Doris to The Kids!

If you live here in the UK you will have been bombarded by the multitude of weather warnings that have accompanied the latest storm to reach our shores from across the Atlantic.

Storm Doris!

We were warned of high-speed winds, some areas hitting over 90mph (we got around 60mph in our area) and high tides, 30cm of snow in the Scottish Highlands…

And sure enough, it was a pretty blustery day!

There was wind (a lot!), rain (brief but heavy!), cloud (all day) and blue skies too!

The wind blew all day, and as per government guidelines, we have to allow for indoor as well as outdoor play in nursery unless it is unsafe outside. Today was not unsafe, but dang cold in the wind! Nevertheless, as kids are, they wanted to run around like loonies in the gales!

Who am I to stop them?

My colleague and I wrapped ourselves and the kids up, and let them go crazy, as we stood there, rooted to the spot unless a rather strong gust of wind uprooted us!

Sitting in my classroom every morning, we talk about the day and the weather. They all commented on the wind, and I mentioned that we were welcoming a guest for the day, Storm Doris.

Doris is a very old lady. It’s her birthday today. She is 1,000,000 years old! A million candles take a long time to blow out, so she will be huffing and puffing the whole day long!

Some of them asked to see her, but I said she was too far away, high up in the sky, like the Giant in Jack and the Beanstalk (our focus story this week!) but that we could still feel her blow!

So I apologise in advance to the parents of my students, who might be babbling on about Old Lady Doris, and her candles! That is what happens when my imagination comes into play at nursery!

Who Ate The Moon? By Shivangi Singh – A Mini Review!

A short while ago, I was asked by my blog pal Shivangi Singh to write a few words about her new children’s book, Who Ate The Moon? She was worried about my time, but I like to help out my fellow bloggers, so Iw s more than happy to comply!

wordpress

A sweet tale of two brothers enamoured by the moon. They find a way to take it home, to keep for themselves, but it disappears.

The story shows their faith that brings the moon back for them!

Sweetly written, with a short educational explanation about the real phases of the moon to end the book!

It is a simple tale which I think most young children would enjoy.

Available free on Apple in IBooks,  Blurb and Smashwords.

Thanks Shivangi for inviting me to rad your lovely book !

#writespiration #104 52 WEEKS IN 52 WORDS WEEK 8 Choke / Bridge #writephoto

Today I am combining two of my weekly prompts, as they came up on the same day!

Writespiration by Sacha Black where the prompt word is Choke. The challenge is that we only have 52 words, no more no less, with which to spin a fictional web!

And

Sue Vincent’s #writephoto, where we have the following photo to use as we wish.

beneath-the-bridge

So here is my little tale…

A bridge over troubled water.

Or over hardly any water.

A stench so foul from the rotting debris, strewn into the water, pungent enough to make the hardiest human choke.

But not me. This place was perfect.

It smelled glorious to me, the new troll on the block, or under the bridge!

Day 22 #Loveuary ❤ – Celebrity Crushes

loveuary

A revisit to a post I did about this a couple of years back!

It’s devastating… Zayn Malik is leaving One Direction!!!!!

How could he??!!!!

Lil Princess is devastated!

In her 7 year old world, they were the be all and end all of, well, everything!

I saw the news, and had to bring her in out of the garden to break this earth shattering news to her, and she spent an hour watching youtube clips, announcing the decision, and then watching their song videos, as it made her feel better… !!!

As they were… no more!

I giggle, thinking about it! She only really discovered them a couple of months ago, as one of her best buddies is obsessed with them and I wonder, is it a peer pressure thing? Or does she feel she has to like certain songs or bands, because the others do?

Takes me back to my childhood, and teen years though… When my walls started off being covered by Kylie and Jason posters…

What a pair, Kylie and Jason, aka Scott and Charlene!

Oh how I loved to watch Neighbours, and was overjoyed that my favourite characters were now branching out into music as themselves!!!

But how can I forget??!! It didn’t start there, the first posters to appear were of Wham! And at least I can honestly say, my heart wasn’t broken when it came out about George Michael, well, coming out! I was Team Andrew Ridgely all the way!

Oh Wham-drew!!! swoon!

Then there was the teeny tiny Tom Cruise!!!

Top Gun!!

I’ve always loved the dark looks, rather than the blonde Adonis style, oh, apart from the gorgeous Brad Pitt… Hubba hubba!!

Brad!

But I remember following Bros, that ‘wonderful’ 80’s band of the “When will I be famous?” Song fame… It was because everyone else in my class was swooning over them, buying their Doc Martens and attaching bottle tops to them, like the boys!

Bros… plus one!

It was all about Matt or Luke Goss…which one of the twins did you fancy? No one paid a blind bit of notice to Craig Logan!

Then, from across the pond came New Kids On The Block!

NKOTB!

Ok, so I look at that picture now and think “Why???!!!!” But at the time, Jordan Knight was to die for, well in my eyes anyway!!!

It was always more a case of liking a band, singer or actor because everyone else did, not because I really liked them!

I wasn’t big on idolising any of our punjabi stars, or Bollywood actors at that time.. (Had you seen them?!) the actresses were pretty, I wanted to be like them, but the actors.. Hmmm! But nowadays the youngsters have so much eye candy, buff, lean metrosexual guys who parade as actors, for drooling purposes!!!

Now if I was 25 years younger… I know who’d be gracing my walls!! 😜

Arjun Rampal

Still, I can’t complain,  I have my pin up lying next to me every night…
