Spidey’s Serene Sunday – Part 192

Don’t you dare say I only work half a day
Don’t you dare sneer at my 10 weeks ‘off’ a year
Give me a lunch break at lunch
Holidays when I choose
No work before 9 or after 5
A weekend just to snooze
Give me this and I’ll give you my roll
But I warn you, my friend
It takes heart
Body and soul

Thanks, Spidey!

It’s finally half term for us here in the Kentish area of the UK, anyway, and I am so glad of the time to finally unwind.

Will I rest?

Probably not as much as others seem to think.

I have two kids to think of too, you know.

And I have lesson plans that need tweaking too.

I loved what Spidey found for us to ponder today though.

It is so easy to see the face of a teacher’s ‘job’.

Short day, lots of holidays, playing with kids…

But we are like icebergs.

You only see the tip of us, unless you live with us.

Then you see what is going on underwater…

  • The early starts, and late nights.
  • The grabbing a chance of a mouthful of lunch in between preparing your classroom for the rest of the day’s learning, marking books, operating clubs, dealing with issues the lunchtimes supervisors can’t handle…
  • Teaching your bladder to only need to be emptied on a minimal basis, and when you do go, learning how to do the most spectacular speed wee ever!
  • Piles of work that comes home, and if not work, hours at computers, researching lessons or cutting out resources ready for the next few days.
  • Hours spent agonising over the assessment and abilities of your children. Working out how to educate each individual, be it through supporting the learning of fundamentals, or embedding and creating an environment of learning that stretches those who already ‘get it’.
  • Crying over the situations some of your children come from, wanting to be there for them above and beyond the call of duty.
  • Paperwork involving ridiculous red tape that needs to be done to appease the government, that takes precious time away from actual teaching.
  • Being unwell, but feeling unable to take time off to recover because you don’t want to let the kids or your colleagues down.
  • Finally getting to a holiday, but not being able to afford to go, because your days off are always in school holiday time when all the prices are ridiculously elevated…

But we do it because we love what we do.

Ultimately, teaching is a vocation, not a career. We care. That’s why we put the time and effort in. (Just a little extra monetary appreciation from the government would be good!)

So… anyone fancy a job swap with me? 😘

Have a peaceful Sunday Peeps ❤ And enjoy your week!

“Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes… including you.” Anne Lamott

Thanks, Spidey!

I think we may have read this one together before, but it is so important, I’m glad Spidey brought it to my attention again.

I am constantly on the go; work, family and writing.

It is non-stop, seriously, and I didn’t understand before, the importance of putting myself first at times, and listening to my body telling me I needed time away from the rigours of life.

But I have managed to balance things now, and learned to spot the signals that I need to rest, break away from normality for a while, in order that I stay on track for 99% of the time.

No one can be on it 100% of the time, but we just need to learn when to switch off, and charge up!

I’ll sleep, watch films of programmes I never get a chance to, read, potter about my house, that is what I need to ground myself.

How do you unplug? 😘

“If you don’t imagine, nothing ever happens at all.” John Green, Paper Towns

Thanks, Spidey!

Think, dream, imagine.

Build your future, aiming for those dreams.

The above quote says it all.

If you don’t even dream it’s possible, how can you make it a reality?

Tell me your aims 😘

“Don’t tell me the moon is shining; show me the glint of light on broken glass.” Anton Chekhov

Thanks, Spidey.

The whole writing thing is on my mind at the moment.

After not hearing anything back from the First Novel Competition, I was tempted to fall into a wallowing muddle, but because I had the charity walk to do, I wasn’t allowed to.

Instead, it made me think back to the fact that I LOVE my story, and I know the couple of people who read it for me in its unaltered state, enjoyed it too.

The biggest thing was to read through and do that whole ‘show, don’t tell’ thing. I was very guilty of it at the beginning as I started writing this piece as a young, inexperienced writer, and I have grown so much since then.

So, this is my next step.

Really combing through it and working out where I can do more showing, and less telling, and tweaking the plot where certain suggestions were made.

It’ll still involve a lot more work, but I know it will be worth it…

Because it is my dream. My story will be told. My book will be out there soon enough!

Tell me about a dream of yours that you have worked really hard to try and achieve 😘

Have a peaceful Sunday Peeps ❤ And enjoy your week!

“Your illness does not define you, your strength and courage does.” – Unknown

Thanks, Spidey.

A quick shoutout to all those Cancer patients and survivors out there.

I’ll be recovering from my fundraising walk for Cancer Research UK when you read this.

(Actually, I hope we will have actually finished…!)

But no matter!

We have raised a great amount to help this charity continue doing the amazing work they do.

We have all been touched by this disease, in one way or another, either knowing someone who has suffered and come through, or sadly lost their fight, or even been one of the warriors against it ourselves.

Here’s hoping there will be a time when Cancer is a thing of the past…

If you were to fundraise for a charity, which would it be? 😘

Have a peaceful Sunday Peeps ❤ And enjoy your week!
