Lorna’s Gin-spiring Prompt #11 – Friendsgiving #Ginspired

The lovely Lorna over at Gin & Lemonade With A Twist Blog has started a new writing prompt.

She hasn’t named her challenge, so I have – Lorna’s Gin-spiring Prompt!

This week, we have the word: Friendsgiving

Now, I am not Canadian or American, so here in the UK we don’t celebrate Thanksgiving – it’s straight from Remembrance Day to Christmas, in our National celebrations.

But of course, I hear a lot about it, with all my friends and family, both blog ones and real life ones, who live on the other side of the Atlantic.

And Friendsgiving – sounds like something cooked up in the era of Friends! But I know it wasn’t. It appears to be a way to celebrate Thanksgiving, with the ‘family’ you choose, i.e. your friends. In a time where many are living away from where their loved ones live, and with increasing costs, it isn’t always easy to get back home for the special day, so groups of friends celebrate together instead, or they choose to have their Friendsgiving just before, or after the real deal, so they can celebrate with those other special people in their lives.

I think that’s kinda cute.

Back when I was at University, the girls I lived and I became very close. I was like the big sister to them, and we used to do something similar for Christmas. A proper Christmas dinner with all the trimmings a week or so before the actual day, so we could celebrate and exchange presents with each other. I played mother, and cooked, then we enjoyed the meal, and each others company before we all travelled back to our homes for the festive season.

So not Friendsgiving, but ChristMates!

And I look forward to another one of those ChristMates meals next week as my Tootie Frootie group of mummy friends are getting together for a festive meal, and a shot of Secret Santa too!

I’ll have another ChristMates meal when we have our work Christmas do too, as I consider the majority of my colleagues to be friends. (And there will be another Secret Santa there too!)

So, I’ll leave you with this thought:  Whether you are celebrating with friends or family, I wish you a wonderful meal full of thanks for the people surrounding you, and all you have been blessed with this year.

Happy Thanks(Friends)giving!

Spidey’s Serene Sunday – Part 150 – #NewYear

img_00411

“New Year’s Day. A fresh start. A new chapter in life waiting to be written. New questions to be asked, embraced, and loved. Answers to be discovered and then lived in this transformative year of delight and self-discovery. Today carve out a quiet interlude for yourself in which to dream, pen in hand. Only dreams give birth to change.” – Sarah Ban Breathnach

Thanks Spidey for that inspirational quote for the New Year.

I just love the idea of ‘carving out’ some moments to sit ‘pen in hand’ to dream!

As a writer, this speaks volumes.

But for all of us, it should be a part of the day.

Tomorrow we will start our new year, and there will be resolutions abounding.

From the health-based ones to the weight loss ones, the self-improvement promises to the bucket list items you want to tick off, the things you are going to stop and those you plan to take up.

We all have dreams and wishes.

And to be honest, only we can make these resolutions, dreams and wishes come true.

If you hope and dream, then take the initiative to actually start your journey to reaching your goal.

Reflect upon what you have achieved so far, and plan where you want to be this time next year.

Along the way, others will support you, but no one else can actually write that book/lose that weight/complete that course/stop that drink from being drunk/(insert any of the things you wish to accomplish).

Only you.

So go on, and really focus on what you want – and GO GET EM!

Enjoy your New Year’s Eve Sunday Peeps!!!!!

What are you hoping the New Year will help you to achieve?

Christmas Leftovers #BoxingDay

Christmas Dinner in all its glory!

You wash, you peel, you cook
The turkey needs a look.
You baste and carve then eat,
A huge and filling feast!

So much leftover! What can you do?
That 14 person turkey decision you rue!
Boxing day dinner sorted, that’s fine.
A nice big pie and a glass of wine!

May Santa have filled your stockings with the fulfilment of all the wishes you may have made this year!

My take on a classic!

On the first day of holidays
My children gave to me
A bucket load of sick, yippee!
On the second day of holidays
My children gave to me
Two nights of coughing
And a bucket load of sick, yippee!
On the third day of holidays
My children gave to me
Three temper tantrums,
Two nights of coughing
And a bucket load of sick, yippee!
On the fourth day of holidays
My children gave to me
Four lame excuses
Three temper tantrums
Two nights of coughing
And a bucket load of sick, yippee!
On the fifth day of holidays
My children have to me
Five super smiles!
Four lame excuses
Three temper tantrums
Two nights of coughing
And a bucket load of sick, yippee!
On the sixth day of holidays
My children gave to me
Six loads of washing
Five super smiles!
Four lame excuses
Three temper tantrums
Two nights of coughing
And a bucket load of sick, yippee!
On the seventh day of holidays
My children gave to me
Seven snow requests
Six loads of washing
Five super smiles!
Four lame excuses
Three temper tantrums
Two nights of coughing
And a bucket load of sick, yippee!
On the eighth day of holidays
My children gave to me
Eight arguments
Seven snow requests
Six loads of washing
Five super smiles!
Four lame excuses
Three temper tantrums
Two nights of coughing
And a bucket load of sick, yippee!
On the nineth day of holidays
My children gave to me
Nine broken presents
Eight arguments
Seven snow requests
Six loads of washing
Five super smiles!
Four lame excuses
Three temper tantrums
Two nights of coughing
And a bucket load of sick, yippee!
On the tenth day of holidays
My children gave to me
Ten tummy aches
Nine broken presents
Eight arguments
Seven snow requests
Six loads of washing
Five super smiles!
Four lame excuses
Three temper tantrums
Two nights of coughing
And a bucket load of sick, yippee!
On the eleventh day of holidays
My children gave to me
Eleven headaches hammering
Ten tummy aches
Nine broken presents
Eight arguments
Seven snow requests
Six loads of washing
Five super smiles!
Four lame excuses
Three temper tantrums
Two nights of coughing
And a bucket load of sick, yippee!
On the twelfth day of holidays
My children gave to me
Twelve great big hugs
Eleven headaches hammering
Ten tummy aches
Nine broken presents
Eight arguments
Seven snow requests
Six loads of washing
Five super smiles!
Four lame excuses
Three temper tantrums
Two nights of coughing
And a bucket load of sick, yippee!
Merry Christmas!!!
