Was It Worth It? First Draft Feedback #AmWriting

I shan’t lie to you.

#AmWriting new

Much as I thought I’d be able to keep myself busy whilst waiting for feedback from my two wonderful alpha readers, that little niggle stayed there…

  • What if it makes no sense?
  • What if they don’t like it?
  • What if I don’t get any feedback because it was that bad?
  • What if I’ve totally wasted eighteen years of my creative life working on a project that wasn’t even worth it?

One had already told me it would take a little time to get through reading, due to their own writing commitments, and as I really value their feedback, I was fine with that. I’ve taken eighteen years to get here, after all, a few weeks more shouldn’t matter!

The other said they’d get to it as soon as they could but it would take a few days.

That’s okay.

I could wait a few days…

And I got my first ping in my inbox just a day or two after, with some initial observations.

Maybe think about changing the title, it doesn’t do justice to what has been read so far.

  • Okay, I get that. Wedded Stress was a working title that I came up with all those years ago, and I was prepared for the fact that I may have to change it if it didn’t suit the end story. It’s just so hard to stop thinking of my WIP as Wedded Stress, but old habits die hard. So, I’ve been thinking of other titles…

More show and less tell.

  • Again I expected that, especially at the beginning of the story, as my writing was pretty immature back then.

A few bits to mull over…

I waited with baited breath for the full feedback, and this morning I got it.

I celebrated with a rather naughty breakfast!

And the reason for my elation?

Let me use my reader’s own words…

“Ok, finished it and I think its ACE! Bags of potential and you need to do something with it because the world needs to read this. Fabulous novel idea.”

It was followed by some really constructive feedback about where I could tighten things, add descriptions, develop some of the characters further, and there is a niggle with POV (Point Of View) but the reader loved the characters!

“They come to life and I don’t think you need to get rid of any.”

And the end statement just made my day…

“I think its an excellent story and as a first draft it’s stunning. A lot of it is written really well so I don’t think you have huge rewrites.”

  • Relief, that I haven’t wasted my time!, and hopefully I don’t need to rewrite it all
  • Gratitude, as my reader used precious time to read my WIP, and gave such helpful feedback
  • Pride, that my writing has been given such praise, even in its rawest form
  • Impatience, as I wait for my other reader to let me know what they think

So the folder came out, the post-its and new erasable highlighters too! I am prepared for the next stage of changes, which I will start after the Bash this weekend!

Peeps, I think this is really happening!

Eeeek!!!!

The Liebster Award

Thank you to Radhika for thinking of me for the Liebster Award!

As I have received this previously, I would like to share Radhika’s post in thanks, and as I love answering questions, I’ll answer them here!

Great questions by the way, Radhika!

  1. If given a chance, what would you like to change about yourself? I’m not sure I’d want to change any of me. As a 40-something woman, I have grown used to my body, personality and it’s quirks. If I changed any of it, would I still have the life I have now, the life I feel is perfect for me?
  2. What were you looking for when you started your blog? Absolutely nothing! I didn’t even know what blogging was!
  3. A movie, book or friend – which one for company when feeling low? Friend, Book, Movie – in that order. My best friends are always at the end of the phone, but being mothers too, they can be unavailable, so I know I’ll always have my books!
  4. What 3 things do you always carry in your purse/wallet? Money, phone, pen with a notebook.
  5. Have you ever dreamed of doing something out of your comfort zone? Not really. I think I always strive to go a little further with whatever I do, pushing myself a step further each time, so it feels achievable.
  6. Do you have any OCD habits (obsessive-compulsive disorder)? I need to know what is planned when we are doing things, and in what order. I can’t not have a plan of action. Funny, since I am such a pantser when it comes to blogging!
  7. Which do you favor – a white lie or a candid truth? I think both have their place in lives. Sometimes the truth hurts, but it needs to be told, to help a person. Equally, there are situations where revealing a truth may be more harmful, so a white lie works better.
  8. What freaks you out most? The thought of my loved ones not being with me.
  9. What is the thing that most irritates you in a person? People who always want to talk about themselves, and seem to have been there, done that, and done it better, no matter what story is being told.
  10. What does this award mean to you? I am humbled that I was thought of. Any recognition like this touches my heart. ❤

Spidey’s Serene Sunday – Part 169 – Smile 😊

“Your smile is your logo, your peronality is your business card, how you leave others feeling after having an experience with you becomes your trademark.

Jay Danzie

Thanks for pinging this one up for me Spidey!

I’ve read this before and loved it.

When it comes to impressions, how we are with a person, how we present ourselves, really makes a difference.

So get that smile plastered on 🙂

Happy Sunday Peeps!

#SoCS May 12/18 – On The Farm

Linda’s prompt for SoCS this week…

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “on the farm.” Find a word that has a farm animal sound in it, i.e. sMOOth, and use it in your post. Bonus points if you include three or more. Have extra fun!

Well, this may be the most random post ever, and I apologise in advance Peeps! But what a doozy that naughty Linda has given us today!

I’m looking forward to some sMOOching next week with my Hubby Dearest, away from the kids, as we are having a weekend away, with the Bash as the highlight of our stay. It’s not often you get time alone as a couple, instead, always having the kids trailing behind wherever you go! And I shan’t be praying to any BAAl deities for abundant fertility  – no thank you, two is enough! I spend so long screaming like a banshee at these two, I already worry about what the NEIGHbours think!

SoMEHow I managed to finish this, PHEW!

How did I do???

Happy Saturday Peeps!
