More Conversations With Strangers

You know me.

I like to chat…lots!

My Hubby Dearest and kids are resigned to the fact that if they are going out somewhere with me, that there is a high possibility that I will end up engaging in some sort of conversation with some random!

Yesterday, I went to the nail salon to get my nails refreshed before my anniversary weekend (as you do) and I entered into a conversation with one of the other clients about what colour, or more specifically, which blue she should go for.

Content that I had helped her with her electric blue shade issue, I settled back to chat to my technician about Instagram, as they don’t have a business account, and I wanted to let them know that I used a picture of my last trip there as an entry for the Black and White Photo Challenge, and that it was responsible for bringing in around 100 views a day, in the last few weeks! I have had over 2000 views just for that post recently!

The electric blue lady’s ears perked up. “What do you mean by posts?” I explained that I blogged.  “Ooooh! Do you have a YouTube channel then?”

“No,” I explained, ” I write, I don’t make videos. I’m a Blogger, not a Vlogger!”

“So, are you like one of them advice writers?”

“Erm, not really. I write about everything and anything that comes to mind. Poetry, fiction, life…”

She went quiet for a moment or two, then quietly said “I have a problem with boys… Like they are just all so bleurgh….”

Okaaay….

I settled back to chat to my technician who has a son in Reception class. She always tells me about his difficulties with writing and concentration, so I try to help out with different strategies she could use with him to get him engaged with mark making, and focussing.

I explained how he is possibly not ‘listening’ or joining in because he doesn’t fully understand instructions, being a student with English as a second language and that the teacher should be addressing him in a simpler way, so he can access all the learning, until his English is more secure.

Ms Electric Blue joined in again.

“So, he doesn’t understand so he doesn’t concentrate? He must have ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder). I’ve got that.”

She went on.

“I think if my boy was at school and I needed to, I’d bug the teacher every day until they’d listen. I worry he might have it too.”

The conversation went on. Her son is only 5 months old. I told her to not expect him to automatically have ADD just because she does. Then she went on to list health complaints her family has (Asthma/ exzcema / Depression) and that she was so scared her baby would have it too. She confessed that her own reading and writing was poor due to her condition not being supported at school, because a proper diagnosis not being issued until she was at college.

By this time, another client, American in nationality, joined in too, giving her advice, which was similar to mine, in that she should try not to assume her baby will carry some sort of condition, and to think positive.

We settled back into our treatments.

She came and sat next to me.

“Being a mum makes you feel so old,” she said, “I’m only 21.”

I gave her a smile, “Well, I’m mum to a near teenager, and an almost 10 year old, and I’m double your age. 42. And I really don’t feel old, most of the time! Enjoy your baby, and try and enjoy the time you have with him at this age. They grow up far too fast!”

She turned back to her nails then, concentrating on the blue…

And just like that, one of my strange conversations with strangers ended.

I did feel I may have left this one, having imparted some useful advice though… and I’m glad the family weren’t around, they would have never let me chat for as long as I had done!

And my nails?

#WritePhoto – Haven

Sue’s #WritePhoto Prompt this week:

I thought I’d continue the adventures of Barbie and Ken!

“Red sky at night, shepherds delight. Red sky in the morning, shepherds warning. That’s what my dad always used to say,” Ken pondered. “It’s 4.30 pm now. What does it mean in the afternoon?”
“Why don’t you go and ask a shepherd, babe? I don’t know!” Barbie lifted her eyebrows and glanced over at her boyfriend, before lowering her gaze to her nails, which she had been filing with great care.
“But babe, it’s not Christmas yet. And you know the shepherds only come out then, for the nativity!”

What is ‘Family’? #ThrowbackThursday

An old post I wrote a while back that I felt like giving an airing to!

wpid-be-wow-blogger.jpg

Over my life time I’ve seen many different types of family, and I’m lucky to be part of a huge, crazy parivaar (Punjabi for family) where there is no lack of love and laughter. But where you get a great amount of people, there are always going to be fallings out, and that one person, or maybe more, that you cant stand!

I think we can all relate to that!

As I said, I have been blessed with this gigantic extended family, and they took up most of my childhood,  every weekend we were together, be it at a wedding, a party, or just at each other’s houses for dinner.  It was character building to say the least, I was the youngest girl cousin on my Pops side out of a good 20, or so, cousins so was spoilt by many, but there were the odd ones who may not have liked the attention that being the youngest afforded me… still, I was brought up well, and wouldn’t make a fuss, I just got on with life.   Then on the flip side, I was the oldest grand child on my Mum’s side, so I had a different stature there!  The ‘Big Sister’ role!

But it’s my immediate family who I will always be thankful for.  A father who did everything for us, to provide us with a stable upbringing, and still catering for the other families needs. A mother who was there for us, at every step of our growing up, she didn’t even follow her chosen career path, choosing to be a full time mum to us, supporting us, helping us, bringing us up when we were down, grounding us when we were too big for our boots. A brother who was the biggest irritant of my life for the first 15 years, but then morphed into one of the most trusted individuals in my life. Then beyond, his wife, my sister-in-law, who is the sweetest person I know, who has also moulded the raw man that was my brother into a most amazing husband, and fantastic father too! And not forgetting my precious little bundle of laughs, my baby nephew!

Talking of husbands, around 14 years ago, I suddenly had a new branch grow onto my family tree, and I acquired new parents, another brother, and another whole new extended family, through my husband!

Hubby Dearest, well he is my rock, and thanks to him  (and a little bit of me) we created our own family, with the additions of Lil Man, and Lil Princess, and the ability to love unconditionally grew considerably in both of us. These two little people, here on Earth because of us, and looking up to us to nurture them, and hopefully encourage them to grow into strong, independent individuals with heart.

But is that all family is? Blood ties, and marriage?

I don’t think so, personally.

I seem to have little pockets of ‘family’ elsewhere in my life, my school ‘family’, my university ‘family’, my work ‘family’, my friends ‘family’, my WordPress Blog ‘family’…

Each of these groups of people have as much of a profound effect on my daily life, as my real family do, in their own way. They are all as important to me, and as essential to me being who I am today, as my parents were. The experiences I have shared with them over the years have also shaped me as a person, and made me the Ritu you see before you.

So, what is ‘family’ to me?

I think the true definition of family is those people who help to shape you as the individual you are today.

writespiration-2017

Write about THE LAUNCH!

And…
Lift off!
The launch went perfectly.
Or so everyone thought.
Peter shuffled backwards, and into the crowd, allowing his shuffle turn into a sprint as soon as he was able.
Looking down at the bag in his hand once he stopped, he gulped.
Shame he’d forgotten to load the toilet paper!

The Launch, because in literally a couple of days a certain lady named Ms De Black is launching her debut novel in her Eden East Trilogy, Keepers! A YA Fiction piece that promises to please fans of JK Rowling, Genevieve Cogman Trudy Canaan and the like!

She has been literally run off her feet with the organisation involved in writing and publishing a book, as well as penning writers help book, and workbook, and working, and being a fantastic mum, and being the Super Boss of the ABBA’s!!!!

So, no wonder she forgot to fill the body of the prompt post first thing this morning lol! Still, a timely reminder meant that no one went without their weekly #Writespiration fix!

Anyhow, I’ve downloaded my copy…. And you? Stop procrastinating…
