#SoCS Sept 3/16 – Accumulate

Linda’s prompt for this Saturday Stream of Consciousness..

Accumulate

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is: “accumulate.” Use it any way you’d like. Have fun!

Well, seeing as it is the day it is for me… my birthday, what better thing to write about than how I have managed to accumulate 41 years beneath my belt!

Oh, and by ‘under my belt’ I mean all that squidgy stuff I am currently trying to get rid of! You can hoard quite a bit under there if you aren’t careful!

Now, in 41 years, I have manage to accumulate a lot of stuff. From toys, to books, (you all know that!) to clothes and jewellery. From photos and physical momentos, to those memories held tightly within my heart and mind.

I wonder whether I am a hoarder. Should I not let go of some of this stuff? The physical stuff at least? But when I look at everything, there is so much emotion attached to each thing, I can’t do it! Ok, I lie. I manage to clear out my wardrobe with relative ease. I can whizz through the kids things pretty quickly, but it’t the other stuff, the memories, the photos, the momentos that I can’t bear to part with.

But I love them all. They take me back to a different time of my life, and bring back all the emotions from that time.

So for now, if you don’t mind, I am keeping my accumulations, and I’m pretty sure there will be plenty more added to the piles over the years to come!

Have a great day!

Reminiscing…

My darling mother had got a few boxes of things ready for me to go through this time.

There were old photos and various paper items. Things from my past. Things that would hold significance for me.

I haven’t finished yet but it has been such fun going through the photos!

I’ll share these with you…. little Ritu going to school for the first time in her oversized blazer,  with the tweed coats and bobble hat we had to wear in the winter and the straw hats as our summer attire!!!

Pink and maroon uniform… wasn’t I lucky?!

FFF 34 – Yesterday Once More

Tuesday is Flash Fiction Foray by Matt The Book Blogger!

Neon Music Sign

Today’s prompt song…

Yesterday Once More – The Carpenters

Feel free to base responses of anything to do with the song, I always enjoy any different takes! 100 words! Make em count!

And my entry…

Looking at all those happy faces in the photos, Edith smiled to herself.
Vera, Rose, Lizzy, Isabel and her.
That was her favourite snap, the five of them on the promenade in Brighton.
A day trip away from the confines of the city. They were so happy, ice creams in hands, holding onto hats that were threatening to be blown away by the sea breeze…
She closed her moistening eyes.
That was 65 years ago.
She was the only one left.
No amount of wishes would bring her friends back, but she couldn’t help wishing it was yesterday once more…

Roses #writephoto

Sue’s photo prompt today reminded me of the first bunch of roses Hubby Dearest gave to me when we were dating. He was a student, so they were never going to be the full-headed, huge, deep red blooms that you need to take a loan out to afford.

But they were roses, there was a dozen, they were red, and they were mine!

I was so touched, I wanted to keep them forever!

Remembering the advice of a friend, instead of trimming them, and sticking them in a vase, I used twine to secure the bunch and then hung them to dry, upside down.  They dried beautifully, with their little heads held high.  The colour faded. What aroma they had, disappeared. But they never failed to raise a smile, when I looked at them. I kept them for a few years, but they got to a state where they started to disintegrate, so I had to say goodbye to them…

Then, two weeks ago, at my parents, I found myself giving my mum the same upside down drying advice! Pops and mum had been away from each other for 5 weeks, as my brother sustained an injury, falling on ice in Finland, where he lives.  Mum went over to him to help out a bit, and Pops was left, home alone.  He keeps busy, but I know how much he missed mum! And when she arrived back, he bought her a beautiful bunch of roses, romantic old fool, my darling Pops!

When I went to visit, they had been sat there for 2 weeks in a vase and were still in amazing condition. Only one bloom was starting to droop. Mum proudly showed her flowers off, and as they were in such good nick, I suggested she dry them upside down, as a wonderful memory!

The photo immediately brought a thought of a haiku to mind, and here it is…

Withering away
Yet showing ageless beauty
Sparking memories

Hugh’s Photo Challenge #6 – Unused

Hugh has prompted us with the word Unused as his photo challenge this week. Check it out here.

And here is my entry… complete with my usual poem!

tapesThey used to be

A necessity

Until replaced

By the CD

Once played until

They wore away

Now gathering dust

No one to play

Still I hang on

To my memories

From Pop and Rock

To Soul and Cheese

And now they’re joined

By my CDs

As digital downloads

Take the lead

I loved my tapes

Recorded with love

Now they lie unused

On the shelf above
