#SoCS Apr. 22/17 – Spell

Linda’s #SoCS Prompt for today…

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is: “spell.” Use the word “spell” any way you’d like. Bonus points if you use it in the first sentence. Enjoy!

Can you spell?

It’s not an easy thing, especially the English language!

We teach a phonetic scheme of reading and writing in school called Read Write Inc, where the emphasis is on learning the basic phonics first, and acquiring the skills to blend and read CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words like cat and dog etc.

Then you get on to the more complex two letter sounds (ng, nk, th, ch, sh etc) ,then the voewls (ay, ee, igh, ow, oo ) and then the split diagraphs (the ay sound in cake for example) and then the ones that almost seem pointless when you can write the same sound severalw ays.. equally, you can say what looks like the same sound in different ways.

Like I read that yesterday. I will read it again tomorrow.

Why spell height with an igh when mite is the same sound yet easier to write? Actually, simpler than that would be myt but that is not even a word!!

Even the word word isn’t easy to grasp! Phonetically it should be wurd

And the sious and tion endings? Why not shus and shun, like lushus (luscious) or attenshun (attention).

Whoever decided to be the God of spelling in English must have been on something, that’s what I think!

The grammar and punctuation is hard enough, without the spellings that bear no resemblance to the words we say!

No wonder they say English is one of the hardest languages to grasp!

Oh, I could go on and on, but I shall leave you with this phonetically correct haiku!

Shore #writephoto

Sue’s prompt this week for #writephoto.

“I’m sure that was the way they told me to go!” Dozy Derek scratched his head. Looking around he realised he had near enough sculpted a new shoreline for the town!

“They told me to clear the pathway for the big guns, so they could lay the road to the new HQ.” He sat there puzzling at the set of directions, and the map that he had been handed.

Slowly, as if a small spark had ignited in his brain, the fog within cleared. he turned the map around.

“No one told me it was this way up! Now, how do I go about rescuing my bulldozer from the sea…?”

WRITESPIRATION #112 52 WEEKS IN 52 WORDS WEEK 16 – Backwards -sdrawkcaB!

Oh Sacha, you evil task master!!!! What have you got us doing this week??

writespiration-2017

Your challenge is to write your story using the weekly theme/prompt and write it in just 52 words…. EXACTLY, no more, no less.
Backwards.
BUT, in addition to that, I want you to write your story backwards…!

Seriously??!!

Ok, so I wasn’t sure, word for word backwards? Sentences backwards? Reflected backwards???

Here’s what I came up with, in several forms! And all 52 words!!!!!

Backwards sentences…

The discussion about changing her surname was always going to happen, but there was no way she was going from Portia Peters to bloody Portia Carr!!!!!
The marriage proposal came soon after.
It had been a few years since they started dating.
Tim stared back sullenly.
“Jeez! You’re so backwards!” Portia huffed.

Word for word backwards…

!!!!!Carr Portia bloody to Peters Portia from going was she way no was there but ,happen to going always was surname her changing about discussion The.
.after soon came proposal marriage The
.dating started they since years few a been had It
.sullenly back stared Tim

Reflected…

And in case that made no sense whatsoever… The original!

“Jeez! You’re so backwards!” Portia huffed.
Tim stared back sullenly.
It had been a few years since they started dating.
The marriage proposal came soon after.
The discussion about changing her surname was always going to happen, but there was no way she was going from Portia Peters to bloody Portia Carr!!!!!

OMG Sasha, that was tough!!!

‘New World Coming’-FFF 38

Matt’s Flash Fiction Foray Challenge this week…

Neon Music Sign

This week’s edition will be on (drumroll please)… Benjamin Wallfisch & Disa’s New World Coming, as suggested by Julie. Feel free to base responses of anything to do with the song, I always enjoy any different takes! If you want to read previous challenges and responses, click here.

You are to write a flash fiction piece of 100 words, but if you go a little over, Matt doesn’t mind!

“People always thought I was the boring one, incapable of doing anything interesting. But I’m about to change that. There’s a new world coming,” Jane murmured, “a new way of thinking, a new set of rules to play by. Life is going to be totally different.”
She was going to take on a whole new role in this unknown world.
What adventures lay ahead?
Slowly she looked down, and smoothed her hand over her expanding stomach.
“And it’s all because of you, little one, the new voice soon to enter into my world, and turn it upside down.”

And as a little aside, I reviewed both the Books and Movie here!
