#SoCS March 9/19 – Abash/A Bash/Bash

Linda’s #SoCS prompt:

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “abash/a bash/bash.” Use “abash,” or “bash” as a noun or a verb. Bonus points if you manage all three. Have fun!

I’m going to a bash this year.

I’ve been to a bash the last three making this my fourth.

It’s not just any bash, but the Annual Bloggers Bash.

Have you heard of it?

It is a great event, where you can meet many likeminded bloggers, and mingle, share tips and ask questions.

There is an awards fuction too, which comprises of catergories whose nominees have been voted for by bloggers worldwide.

I’ve been lucky all three years, coming home with some sort of recognition, from second place, Best Overall Blogger award 2016, to the winner Best Overall Blogger 2017, to third place Best Overall Blogger 2018. I was even a guest speaker last year!

It appears that I have peaked.

This year I have been nominated for Best Book Blogger ( grateful for the nomination) but there is no way I could be placed in this category, as I know of many more, focussed on book, blogs that are more deserving.

But I shan’t come away from the day abashed. No.

I’ll come away with more beautiful memories of a fantastic day!

One Liner Wednesday – #1LinerWeds – Teacher/Mum Problems

“Being a teacher and a mother is a really tough double role; you are paid to spend your days nurturing other peoples’ kids, yet feel guilty within, if you need time to look after your own…”

Ritu

By no means is this a dig at anyone who I work with.

I am lucky with my management team. They totally understand that family is a most important part of our lives, and that work/life balance is key to happy teachers and success at school for all.

No.

I am talking about that internal tug of war we educators will all feel, at one time or another, if we decide to start our own families.

The amount of times I have had to argue with myself about letting my class, the parents, and the school down, if I end up taking a day or two off because own child is unwell…

It’s silly really, isn’t it?

Obviously my child should come first, and they do, believe me, but I am also lucky that under normal circumstances, I have their grandparents to help out if they are under the weather. If they are really bad, there are times only mummy will do.

But times like now, when the in-laws are away, it gets hard.

Take today for instance.

Lil Princess was battling with a severe headache on the weekend. She woke up on Monday with a slight ache still, but wanted to soldier on. Dosed up with Calpol, she went to school but I worried about her a lot, as she wasn’t right, and I also had the added joy of Parent’s Evening that night, until 7pm…

She walked to her grandparent’s house at the end of the day and developed a really bad cold, which was what the headache was a precursor to… Head cold. No fun.

Tuesday, she was full of it. Bunged up. Head ache, cough. Temperature.

It was awful for her.

My bro and sis in law were both home and they had already offered to have her the next day, as they knew I had another Parent’s Evening and they happened to be home.

But I felt so bad.

I know this parents meeting is really important. But so is my kid.

Again, I feel thankful. I am lucky enough to have a solution to childcare. And the offer of her being there today too, if she is still not right, is reassuring. I am not fobbing her off on anyone. But the guilt…

The guilt that I am projecting on myself… I should have stayed at home. I should have not thought a toss about work.

Yet I did.

And I left her… (in good hands, of course)

#SoCS March 2/19

Linda’s #SoCS prompt…

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “cele-.” Find a word that starts with or contains “cele” and use it any way you’d like. Enjoy!

Celebration time!

Yes, that is definitely the thing for us this weekend.

Yesterday we were on tenterhooks, waiting to find out what school Lil Princess would get a place at.

On that news that morning, there was a report about how over 100,000 children wouldn’t get their first choice of schools, and that there was even a shortage of places in secondary schools.

Apparently, in her year of birth, there was a baby boom. That was 11 years ago. Surely the government had access to birth figures and should have been suitably prepared… Seems not.

So, even though I was pretty sure she would get her first choice, especially as her brother is already there, there was still a worry.

And it appears that our county is one of the latest to send out the offer emails. Most letters were posted to arrive this morning, or emails sent to arrive in parents inboxes in the morning.

Not Kent.

No. We were advised that after 4pm the emails would start to arrive, and if you applied by paper form, your letters would be posted today and so you wouldn’t even know until tomorrow!

And I was impatient, checking my phone at every break to make sure nothing had sneaked in early…

Then at lunchtime, one of her peers’ mums, who works at the school, told me her husband had had THE EMAIL! And it was only 1.30pm!

Well, my brain went into overdrive then. Why had we not received notification yet? Had I sent the application in properly? What if she hadn’t got into her first choice of school?

It wasn’t long before, finally, that message pinged up.

She got in!

To the school we wanted, the place she wanted, and the same as her brother.

That allowed a wave of relief to wash over me.

So we have to celebrate her good news this weekend.

(Then we can start silently panicking about her SATS tests in May…)

One-Liner Wednesday – #1LinerWeds – Thankful

“This time two years ago, I was involved in a huge car accident, writing off my car and getting stretchered off the motorway; one year ago, I fell and injured my arm, nearly fracturing my elbow and getting signed off work for two weeks; this year, I am sufficing with migraines… Next year, I aim to be healthy – thankful I’m here to remember the past and plan for the future.”
