Spidey’s Serene Sunday – Part 230

“I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go into the other room and read a book.”

Groucho Marx

Oh, I loved this quote, Spidey!

This weekend I have been talking reading and books a lot, with my uncle, who came to visit me. This is my mum’s eldest brother. My Mamaji. And he lives in Kenya. I haven’t seen him in 18 years, since my wedding,

He’s a very special man to me. Another dad. And someone who has inspired me to read. Both him and my mother read copiously when I was younger, and though life may not allow them to read as much, even in retirement, they are both like me and would rather have a good book in their hand, than an eye on the goggle box, as my mum always calls it!

My Mamaji treated himself this trip, to an All New Kindle Paperwhite, and he brought it with him, to compare with mine, and to discuss book-related matters.

He’s a non-fiction reader more than fiction, and my memories of him are always of him with his nose in a book or the paper. I remember his bedroom in Kenya distinctly, with piles of books lining walls too!

In fact he was nearly a PhD Graduate in the 60s, but due to personal problelms, he never finished it, and it is a regret he feels keenly. He studied here in London, at Queen Mary’s College and Imperial College, both of which his took my aunt, my Mamiji, to visit last week!

There was a trunk filled with his belongings in my parent’s garage. My mum has kept it safe since it was entrusted to her care in the early 70s and she hasn’t dared open it, or get rid of it.

A couple of weeks ago, Mamaji stationed himself in the garage of Pops and Mum’s house, to rummage through his memories. The trunk was filled with all sorts, including a handmade suit of his, some other hilariously 60s clothes and TONS of books. When I phoned mum that day, she was laughing as she told me how he was like a child in a toyshop, delving into the memories of an extremely precious time for him.

I was in awe of his memory.

Even yesterday, as he mentioned the titles of some of the books, and the authors, some of whom had been his PhD lecturers, his eyes glistened with pure joy. He told mum to give the books away, as he can’t take them back, but he also had a ‘small’ list of ones he would ask her to keep, for memory’s sake.

I know I shall be rummaging around in that trunk before they get given away, to get another insight into Mamaji and his younger life.

Before he left, his parting words to me were, “Send me that book of yours when it’s done.”

Another member of my family who has been such a strong, silent support of my writing dream. He was so proud the day my poetry book came out, and I know I just need to do this, get this book published, not just for me, but for all those dear to me, who have so much faith in my ability.

So… tell me, who is part of your silent support group?

“I will love the light for it shows me the way, yet I will endure the darkness because it shows me the stars.”

Og Mandino

Many thanks, Spidey, for that thought provoking quote.

It’s easy to chug along with your plans for life, especially when everything is going your way.

Not so simple when it feels like everything is going against your every wish.

The above quote really made me think.

Because recently, certain dreams of mine have been put on hold, in order to realise others.

I feel like I am living a life of light and darkness at the same time.

Light, with my professional life, finally knowing I have my own class, but also fretting as I have a lot to set up in my classroom, and I can’t wait for school to end so I can make my mark!

Dark with my writing, but I know it is not a good time to finish my editing. I can’t give it a half hearted effort, after all this time I’ve spent, coaxing it out into the world. The stars are there though, showing me the way. I know I will get there, but it’s just not knowing quite when…

So… tell me, do you have light and dark sections in your life?

“When I’m tired, I rest. I say, ‘I can’t be a superwoman today.”

Jada Pinkett Smith

Thanks Spidey!

Yes! Yes! Jada, Yes!!!

I agree with you 100%!

I just wish I could follow that thought process through.

I need to really learn when to step back and say “no, I can’t do that. I am too tired.”

Instead I am always running on nearly empty, refuelling just enough to get through, then running myself low again.

That is not a good way to live.

I really need to take Mrs Pinkett Smith’s advice, so I can continue to be a superwoman, like all those others out there!

So… tell me, do you know when to take a break?

What dreadful hot weather we have! It keeps one in a continual state of inelegance.

Jane Austen

Thanks Spidey, for another apt one!

I am in total agreement with Ms Austen here.

The heat makes me melt.

I glow. (Polite way of saying I sweat!)

Makeup? What’s the point? It slides off anyway.

Clothes? Do I have to wear them?

I am not good in high heat.

We had a day of over 30 degree weather yesterday. Oh boy, I felt it. And the air con isn’t working (again) in my car. Torture!

Today I am taking Lil Man to another cricket match. It is meant to be cooler, but still warm… Will I be able to drive home? Or will I be a puddle on the cricket green?

Definitely inelegance in action…

So… tell me, how do you feel about the heat?

Spidey’s Serene Sunday – Part 224 – Dreams

Dreams are the seeds of change. Nothing ever grows without a seed, and nothing ever changes without a dream.

Debby Boone

Thank you Spidey, and hello Peeps! It’s good to be back with you all again after my feeling unwell last week.

I really love the quote Spidey found for me to ponder upon this week.

Dreams.

We all have them.

I don’t mean the things that float around in your head when you are asleep, but your aspirations.

Your hopes.

Your dreams.

Those goals you wish to achieve in your life.

We all need something to live for, to work towards, to reach.

Without dreams, what are we doing? Living each day, just to get through it, to the next.

That’s not life.

That’s existance.

Whereas if you have that dream to strive to make a reality, you have a focus.

Some may dream of a happy life at home, with a perfect family.

Some want that new car, or a specific job role.

You may dream to meet someone special, or important to you.

My dream is to see my novel finally in print, out there, for others to read and share.

And now, because I have focussed on it, that dream is a few more steps closer to reality. The editor has read it, so the editing is happening. A cover is being looked at. And I have author branding! Eeeks! With a website, and Facebook page to match!

My dream is to have my own class – truly my own class.

As the last few years I have been team teaching with certain colleagues, and though my time is just that, my time in class, it’s not the same as having full responsibility for your own classroom, and your children. Maybe the next academic year will bring that to fruition.

My dream is to have my forever home.

I love where we live, but the children are fast outgrowing the space we have. It’s crunch time. We are looking at whether it is better to go big and extend, or to spruce up, sell up and buy the perfect place… It’s a work in motion.

There are a few of my dreams, and I am slowly working on each of them. I don’t want to get to the end of my days, feeling like I never gave them my best shot.

So… tell me, what are you doing to make your dreams come true?

Have a peaceful Sunday Peeps  And enjoy your week! ❤
