#SoCS – March 12, 2022 – Trip

Linda’s SoCS prompt:

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “trip.” Use it any way you’d like. Have fun!

The first thing that came to mind when I read this prompt was a trip I took with school.

I was lucky enough to go and visit a country I’d have no reason to, in my normal life.

Russia.

Back then, they were coming out of the collapse of the Soviet Union.

We were instructed to take certain things, like ladies’ tights and biro pens, with us to gift the chambermaids, and sweets for the children we might encounter.

I remember the cold as we arrived.

We were in St Petersburg, first.

And we were surrounded by people who were trying to bring themselves out of poverty and restrictions they’d lived with for years.

Moscow was the same.

But different.

Here, Mcdonald’s had just opened a few days before, for the first time, in Russia. Our coach drove past a queue that looked like it stretched nearly a mile, wrapped around a block. A queue filled with people wanting to taste a little bit of what felt like freedom to them.

Wherever we went, people were trying their hardest to make a living. And so many of them supplemented their honest jobs with sidelines of selling various souvenirs to tourists.

I remember a chambermaid coming up to us and asking us if we needed help, as we struggled to get a particularly stupid younger member of our troupe back to her room, after drinking something she purchased illegally. When we shook our heads, she pulled wooden spoons decorated like Babooshka dolls out from under her apron, and said “You vant to buy?”

Then there was the time the waiter in the hotel restaurant served us our drinks, looked around for any of his superiors, and then whisked away his tray to reveal some vinyl records. “You vant to buy?” Er, no thanks. They were Des O’Connor records, I kid you not!

We had been accosted outside by people selling bootleg vodka and even champagne, which we had avoided. However, when we arrived in Moscow and entered the lift to take us to our room, a man with a trench coat and the traditional Russian fur hat, carrying a metal briefcase, entered with us.

The doors closed and the four of us stepped uncomfortably to the rear of the lift, feeling a little intimidated by him. As the lift climbed upwards, he turned around, grinned at us and swung open his briefcase, which was filled with bottles of vodka and champagne, nestled in foam beds. “You vant to buy?” he asked.

Thankfully the lift reached our floor and we hastily escaped with a flurry of no thank yous!

We saw so much on this visit, including the Basilica, Lenin’s tomb. The beautiful buildings and the history of this place…

But what will stay with me are the haunted faces of so many people.

And my fear, now is, that, what with everything happening in Ukraine, and the way Russia is being sanctioned, those innocents in Russia, as well as all those affected in Ukraine, will be carrying those haunted faces for a long time to come.

Chai And A Chat #176 #ChaiAndAChat

Well, that week whizzed by, didn’t it?

Is your drink ready?

  • If we were having chai I would give you that school update that I know you all wait for. Well, I made it through a full weel, with no illness, so that is a poisitive! However, there were headaches. This week was a tad mad, with so many things happening. So many meetings, forms to fill in, and special days happening, that the week did whizz by. I had a meeting which I was dreading on Thursday, and was worried about how it would bode for my day, when it started with my breakfast preparations looking like this. Thankfully the mishap wasn’t indicative of my day and the meeting went even better than I could have hoped! I breathed a huge sigh of relief! Especially since I had also been in costume for said meeting (see below) as it was also World Book Day!
  • If we were having chai, I’d have to tell you that on Tuesday, though, a lovely thing happened. One of my children is Romanian, and his mother came in with a bag filled with tulips. She explained that the 1st March is Martisor in Romania, the celebration of the first day of spring. Gifts are given, and it is quite a celebration. With this in mind, she printed off a sheet from the internet, forme to read to the children, to teach them about why it is celebrated in Romania. She has bought a tulip for every child, and each tulip had a little nte from the pupil, saying Happy 1st March and Happy Srping, from him! This touched my heart! She had also created larger bunches for the staff. They are still blooming beautifully in my vase! This is the way education should be in the EYFS, with in the moment learning. I love my class and their families!
  • If we were having chai I’d remind you that it was World Book Day on Thursday, too, and you know I like a bit of dressing up! We decided that our team theme would be the Mr Men and Little Miss Characters, and I, obviously, was Little Miss Chatterbox! Could any other have been more appropriate? We had such fun, and the children really enjoyed themselves, too! Oh, and I had to go to the orthodontist dressed like this, too… as well as that meeting I had mentioned above!
  • If we were having chai I would confess that the week has been dire for writing. 0 words, I have to admit, but the stress of the meetings, etc, meant I had nothing to give! Still, Hubby Dearest was a total doll, and he set up a new monitor for me in my office so I have a larger screen to work on when writing! Oh, I do love him, so! I am getting used to it but it is definitely easier on the eyes! And do you like my new fluffy chair throw? I feel rather decadent with that on my seat, and warmer, too!
  • If we were having chai I’d tell you that despite the rain that has been tipping down, on Saturday we managed to go out for the evening. I had a little shopping do to, pluse we hadn’t been out to celebrate the family birthdays last month, so we had a meal at The Big Easy, in Bluewater, which was so filling… Seriously, I need to stop eating so much! My waistbands are becoming less forgiving, every day!
  • If we were having chai I’d end with a little pic of my gorgeous Sonu Singh who sat in the conservatory observing the rain falling down the conservatory roof for ages…

This week I have a meeting with a parent, an observation to do on a student, a meeting with our EYFS Governor, plus a few sessions where staff are in and out. Coupled with that Lil Princess will be joining me in school as their school is shut on Friday, so I get an extra set of hands! I can’t even think what else is happening, but I’m sure there is plenty!

And while you’re here, did you sign up for my mailing list? I am in the middle of writing an exclusive Chickpea Curry Lit story for my subscribers, and there will be news, tips and even recipes! You know you want to join… go on! Click the pic below to sign up!

Spidey’s Serene Sunday – Part 365 – Rain

img_00411

“The nicest thing about the rain is that it always stops,. Eventually.”

Eeyore

Thanks, Spidey! Since it hasn’t stopped raining much, here the last few days, it’s a good thing to get positive about it, since we can’t change it!

The weather, as is expected here in the UK, is extremely changeable, especially right now during that Spring cusp. Not so much April showers, rather showers as and when the clouds decide to empty their load, and sometimes their loads are rather full!

Rain on school days is a bit of a pain, because the kids need to get out and run around, but if it’s tipping it down, wet play means they are like caged animals, craving the feel of fresh air, and it doesn’t make for an easy class to teach, either!

But, as my friend Eeyore says, it will stop, eventually, and usually the sun decides to pop out after.

Yes, it can be a pain when rain stops events happening, but to be perfectly frank, for me it is a great excuse to be sat at home with my book!

So, what do you think of the rain?

Wishing you a wonderfully peaceful Sunday, Peeps!

#SoCS – March 5, 2022 – Way To Go!

Linda’s SoCS prompt:

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “way to go.” Use it as a phrase or use it in its literal sense. Enjoy!

I’ve been harping on about being exhausted for the last couple of weeks, despite having had a week of half-term break.

It’s true. I am still shattered.

And I have no idea why.

Well, maybe I have an inkling.

I wrote a lot in the week I was off, more than I have for a long while. That was actually refreshing.

Then we started back. Now, the length of the rest of the terms at school are pretty standard, now, until the end of the year. Six weeks long, each, with two two-week breaks in between them.

But this one seems to be packed. And I mean literally. Every week is filled with meetings and visits. Deadlines and forms to fill in. On top of what am really there for, which is to teach my wonderfully special class.

A couple of days ago, I was especially nervous, since we had a school advisor visiting, and she was going to be chatting to me (grilling me!) about my department because, as the EYFS Phase Leader, the Nursery and Reception classes are my remit.

I needed to sell myself and my department, imagining it was an Ofsted Grilling.

It started late (not my fault, she also likes to talk!) and my 45-minute meeting ended up at nearly an hour-long (because I like to talk, too!)

But, the end result was she was really happy with whatever I had waffled on about, and she even took away details of my book!

The feedback to my Head was extremely positive, and I felt that all the work I and the team have put in, has been recognised.

Coupled with a great bit of feedback from my Deputy Head and Mentor, after his observation of one of my letters, and how he feels I have grown as a ‘leader’, it’s been a good, albeit tiring, week!

So I say “Way to go!” to myself, this weekend!
