Spidey’s Serene Sunday – Part 89 – Diwali Special

“It’s better to light one candle, than to curse the darkness.” – Unknown

Spidey and I thought it would be good to dedicate today to Diwali, or Bandi Chhor Divas, the Festival of Lights, as us Sikhs, and Hindus out there celebrate annually

If you are unaware of the festival, please read about it here. I posted last year about why we celebrate!

The quote Spidey found was ideal, in my eyes.

It is full of positivity.

We light candles, or divas, today, to celebrate the coming out of the darkness of our of our Gurus.

But that candle is metaphoric. To me, it symbolises one positive thought or action that we could make, to release us from the negativity of the world. One thought in the right direction that could make what seems to be a situation of no hope, into a situation of possibilities.

To me, it symbolises one positive thought or action that we could make, to release us from the negativity of the world. One thought in the right direction that could make what seems to be a situation of no hope, into a situation of possibilities.

Today, I will spend Diwali with my family, enjoying our time together. We will go to the temple and literally light a candle, and in turn, ignite a flame of hope that positivity reigns in this world.

So now Peeps, I am off to celebrate, light candles, eat lots, and have fun!

If you are celebrating, a very Happy Diwali to you!

If you aren’t, my wishes of happiness and prosperity, and an abundance of positive light, are still winging their way out to you!

Enjoy your day Peeps!

Ritu’s Healthy Living – Week 12 #icandothis

Well well well!

It’s been another roller coaster week.

Holidays. They tend to do that, you know!

I have been killing my step count via my fitbit over the last few weeks, which has been amazing! But this  week… put it this way, even my Fitbit knows I’ve been relaxing! I think today was the first day since Monday that I hit my daily target!

But I have been reading, and enjoying time with my parents… and obviously that has affected my eating! I have tried to be good, but it’s hard not to indulge when you are back home with Pops and Mum… she’s a great cook! and then you slip in the odd meal out, or cup of tea and rather large scone… oops!

But I have been good otherwise! See my achievement below!

Tonight, I knew the plan was for the family to order a chinese takeaway. I came prepared and thought I would try a Slimming World ready meal, available at Iceland, of Sweet and Sour chicken with plain rice. That saved the syns for a few nibbles from the starters!

20161029_200049

It was ok… but I may just stick to eating the real deal next time!

Other food this week, looked a bit like this, including homemade Weetabix/oat carrot muffins!

And my results this week?

1lb off!

I got this from Slimming World yesterday!

Yes! I reached the target I set with Slimming World, of 10 stone!

So that is another 1lb off, making 13lbs with Slimming World and 18lb in total over the last 12 weeks!

Seriously, I am not sure how I managed it, but i did!

Now the ideal will be to get down a fedw more, to 9 and a half stone. But even if it is just below 10 stone, I would be happy! 10 stone is definitely my happy weight. I can deal with being 10 stone!

Really I need to do some toning, the mummy tummy is still there, a little emptier, a little flatter, but still a pouch sitting there, above my bikini line, taunting me.. but then again, there are great control pants out there!!!

I have no idea what next week will bring.

a) the in-laws will be away for 6 weeks, from Monday,  so there is a lot of household stuff that I will need to take charge of, at their place.

b) I’ll be rushing around so need to make sure I don’t resort to convenience food

and the biggie

c) it’s Diwali tomorrow, and there will be all manner naughtiness, food wise… temptation that I won’t be able to avoid!

But at least I’ll have fun, eh!!!!

Have a wonderful night/day Peeps!!!!

Until next week, when I let you know the effects of the above 3!!!

#SoCS Oct. 29/16 – In/Out

Linda’s  SoCS prompt this week…

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is: “in/out.” Use one, use both, use ’em any way you’d like. Enjoy!

You put your right arm in
Your right arm out
In out in out Shake it all about!
Shake it all about!
Do the Hokey Cokey
And you turn around
That’s what it’s all about!
Whoa the Hokey Cokey!
Whoa the Hokey Cokey!
Whoa the Hokey Cokey!
Knees bent
Arm stretched
Rah rah rah!

The first thing that came to mind once I had read the prompt.

Closely followed by in… out…in…out… the naughty thoughts!

Stop!

Then it was the way money seems to find a way in to my account, only to disappear out rather quickly too!

Followed by kids with fingers in their noses, then when they realise they are being watched, that same finger is quickly pulled out!

Ok, my stream of consciousness is definitely getting warped here!

I must stop!

Thank you and have a good day Peeps!

Creature #writephoto

Sue’s photo prompt this week.

cave-creature

Oh, this was it! This was going to be the big one, she just knew it!

Rosie buried her hands deep into her pockets and stamped her feet a couple of times on the ground. Jeez it was cold! As she exhaled, her breath was captured in the air, like a cloud. Remember the days when you would pretend you were smoking, blowing out plumes of smoke?

She trained her eyes on the cave. Months, they had been trailing it, this creature, that had captured the fascination, at first, of the locals, then slowly it became a nationwide interest.

The Black Ghost. No one knew what it was, but the descriptions varied from witness to witness. A large dog, a panther, a cross between a wolf and a lion, speculation was rife! Luckily there had been no ‘victims’ as such, but petty thefts had been reported, you know, like food out of pets bowls.

Sightings were always around here, at dusk, with a darting creature spotted, but recently, it seemed that a more accurate location had been pinpointed to this cave.

Her camera was set. James had just popped to the garage a short drive away to pick up some hot drinks and snack supplies.

“Hurry up Jimbo…” Rosie muttered under her breath. She wasn’t scared, not really, but the moors could be an eerie place around this time of night.

Then she saw it.

Quick as a flash she got the camera focused and the shutter clicked away.

There it stood, looking back at her. A creature that was pure black, and almost impossible to see in the darkness. The photos she took only really registered the eyes. Two bright spheres, in the inky darkness.

And it looked like it was coming towards her!

Oh man, where was James????

But as it came closer, it wasn’t getting bigger, it appeared to get smaller, and Rosie’s expression changed from one of abject terror to a gooey smile.

This was no monster! It was a cat!

 A beautiful kitty, coal black with the most stunning emerald green eyes that she had ever seen!

It started winding its body around her legs, like her own at Fluffy would do and she instinctively reached down to stroke it.

~~~
A split second, that was all it took. James stared at the cave then at the camera on the floor in disbelief. He had been walking over to Rosie when he saw the creature approach her. Too late to say anything, he hurried over to her, only to witness her reaching down to stroke it, and then  – GONE!
Neither the creature nor Rosie were there.
Picking up the camera, he scrolled back to see if there was anything in the photos.
A series of shots showed a shadowy creature, unclear, but with every frame, it looked different… from a scary looking snarling hound, it seemed to morph into what looked like a domestic cat.
Calling out Rosie’s name held no response.
James picked up the bits of equipment they had set up, and hurried back to the car.
He was still no wiser as to what the creature was, but it was clear now, this thing was dangerous…
My Love Of Reading…
Another little blast from the archive past! Excuse me while I dive into my kindle…!
Reading a recent reblog by my favourite ape, Chris, made me think… (Yes, really! I do tend to think sometimes😜!)
The original post, from the blog Kawanee’s Korner, can be found here.
It was a quote about why I love to read…
12122443_1191860680828070_8876318214586155432_n
It made me think of a few occasions when I wasn’t sure whether my love of books was normal…
From when I can recall, in my childhood, books were always an integral part of my upbringing. Whether it was stories that my mother read to us, or the books that I loved to read, to the piles of books by my mother’s bedside, and the shelves chock full of various titles, from fiction to non fiction, in the study.
I hated to be without a book. We would embark on many long car journeys, to and from the South, visiting various family members, and attending functions, and I would more or less always have a book with me, to read in the car.
It was devastating when I started to suffer headaches whilst reading on the move… all those wasted hours where I could be submerged in the latest story of choice! Trains were ok, so were planes, but car or bus journeys, a total no-no. My mum subscribed to some story magazines where you got the audio version on tape alongside a magazine with the stories. So at least I was able to listen to stories as we travelled.  But it wasn’t the same as reading whatever book I was consuming at the time.
Still, I carried on reading, whenever I could. From the favourite childhood authors, to the soft romances by Danielle Steele, as that was what my mum had at home. She also loves to read wartime family sagas, so I devoured them too.  As I hit my teens, I wanted something more meaty.  I am not a crime or thriller fan, and neither is my mother, so there was nothing like that for me to read, but the Flowers In The Attic series were sat on a high up shelf.
The series, by Virginia Andrews, got me hooked.  I read them all, and probably several times over.  Mum had other books by the author too, and so I slowly devoured them all, and as new ones were published, we would buy them, and I would read and read and read…
As I grew older, I still had a social life, but it wasn’t the be all and end all for me, not being in a pub or club on a Friday or Saturday, at 16, like it as for my classmates.  I was either with family, or happily tucked up with my favourite book. I didn’t know many others my age who loved to read like I did… perhaps I was the bookwormy geek that deserved to be the School Librarian!
Oh I loved that title!  I used to spend lunchtimes in the library, sorting out books, recommending titles for the younger girls in the school. The actual school librarian was a tiny, and I mean tiny, little Chinese lady, and I feel awful that I have forgotten her name! She was a little 4 foot book whirlwind, and she was the gentlest of souls, not like the stuffy librarians you see portrayed in films and programmes generally.
Anyway, I am letting myself get carried away with my memories!
Now, when you finish your exams, say your A-levels, that is something to celebrate! What do you do? Go out for a meal, drinks, that sort of thing, right?
Not for me! The year I was doing my A-Levels, there was a new book being released. A Suitable Boy, by Vikram Seth.
vikram sethIt was a huge tomb of a book, the longest book to be written in the English language, in one volume, at the time. It was nearly 1500 pages long! A very involved family saga based around an Indian family. I was desperate to read it! My mum bought the book, and held it like a carrot, dangling it in front of me, telling me that it would be my treat once my exams were over. I was so motivated! Seriously! Sad am I?
There are probably those who would actually think so, but for me it was such a great thing to work towards!  The exams finished, and I was given the book to read… and boy did I read!!
My Pops actually got a little worried. I was holed up in my room, in my bed for about a week, not wanting to go anywhere. He, being the concerned father, asked my mum if I was ill. “No dear, your daughter is just reading…”
And I was. I finished that 1500 pages over a week. I was determined to do this.  For me it was a like a week away, getting right into the story. My mum had said that she would wait for me to finish before she read it, she could take months to read a book compared to me and the lengthy sittings of reading that I could undertake, being a single, young girl, with no other responsibilities! (I’m pretty sure she still hasn’t read it! It’s only 22 years later!)
Can I just slip in here, as I read some facts about A Suitable Boy on Wikipedia, I found out there is a sequel coming next year! Called A Suitable Girl… I know what I will have on pre order!
Anyway, as I went to university, books, of the reading for pleasure variety, took a took a backseat, as I got involved with student life properly.  See, I wasn’t the geek that I had always thought I was!  But you know, they were never far away. It might have taken me a tad longer to finish a book, but I still read, intermittently.
And over the years, I’ve carried on reading, sometimes I finish books within a week, sometimes it takes longer, but there is always a book near by, be it a physical book, or my Kindle, or even the Kindle app on my phone, I know I can read almost anywhere.
As the original quote that inspired this post said, I love that feeling of getting swept away into this ‘other’ world, this whole parallel universe where the story I am reading, is taking place. I almost feel a sense of loss when a book I have particularly enjoyed finishes.
So, be it chick lit or biographies, historical romances or family sagas, I love to read them, I always shall, and I don’t care if I am a nerd for loving books!
