Oh To Be An Author…! #ShamelessPromotion

How big is your TBR pile?

I used to be able to judge how many books I had, by looking at my shelves.

Now, in this digital age, I turned to a Kindle to save space, as I have no room for more books, because of the children’s books, and my teaching resources!

I literally donated 7 huge boxes of books to the British Red Cross last summer when we had a clear out, and converted our study into a bedroom for Lil Man. It meant less space for our stuff, but at least the kids had the privacy they needed!

But it means that I really have no clue what is in my TBR pile, unless I scroll through the contents of my Kindle!

I appear to have around 35 unread books waiting for me!

The great thing about my Kindle is that I can pretty much support my fellow Indie authors straight away by downloading the books of interest to me as they get published.

Though I sometimes forget what I have stored to read for the future.

Just the other day I was looking to see what is next among my pile of virtual books, and I was so excited that I had, among others, books by Sally Cronin, Sue Vincent, Judith Barrow and April Munday. I have books by Robbie Cheadle and Colleen Chesebro to share with Lil Princess too.

And I felt proud that I actually know these talented writers, and can count them as my friends!

Two years ago, authors were haloed beings in my books, excuse the pun. The ones you could hope to emulate, but really had no chance to reach their successes.

But now I realise, two years on, that we are able to become one of ‘them’.

If we want to do it, we can become one of those haloed beings too!

Ok, so we may not reach the financial successes that the likes of J.K. Rowling and Stephen King enjoy, but to be honest, for me, success would be to be sat on the TBR pile of someone I know (and ultimately for the book to be read and reviewed, obviously!)

So, here’s hoping I pull off that writing through August thing, so I am able to say to you all, that “Hey! I have a fiction book out there too!” sooner, rather than later!

And, I know I am on the bookshelves, or Kindles, of some readers out there too… I managed to become a published poet last year!

Have a wonderful Wednesday Peeps!!!!

Melting…

I’m not ungrateful by any means. I do love the summer, and the warmth… I just wish I wasn’t at school, to actually appreciate it!

I shouldn’t really complain, right?
But you need to understand my plight, right?
Summer’s here in full force, right?
Sun lotion and barbeque sauce, right?
But temperatures over thirty, right?
Leaving me sweaty and dirty, right?
Kids can’t cope with the heat, right?
Ice cream ain’t just a treat, right?
Surely work can’t be legal, right?
I can’t even sleep at night, right?
And don’t get me started on pollen, right?
Itchy eyes, sneezes and throat, right?
I just need a holiday, right?
Then I might feel alright, right?

Tasty Tuesday – Nutella Twists!

Now, those of you who came to the Blogger’s Bash had a chance to try my baked goodies.

I have already posted about how to make the Rocky Road, but there were a few requests for the Nutella Twists.

Around Christmas, I tried a recipe called a Nutella Christmas Tree. It was a huge success so I thought I would adapt the recipe a little so it was no longer a tear and share pastry, but stand alone twists for my Blogily’s enjoyment!

NutellaTwists (1)

Ingredients

2 sheets of ready rolled Puff Pastry (Yes I cheat! I’m a busy mum, I think it’s ok to help yourself a little!)
Nutella Jar
One egg or milk
Icing sugar, to dust

Equipment

Large baking tray x 2
Greaseproof paper
Cooling rack

Method

  • Preheat oven to 180 degrees C.
  • Cut greaseproof paper and line baking tray
  • Unroll one sheet of puff pastry and lay on the greaseproof paper
  • Take a knife and spread Nutella liberally all over the pastry sheet
  • Carefully roll the second sheet directly on top of the first sheet.
  • Using a knife, cut the pastry into inch wide strips.
  • Hold one side down, and from the other end gently twist each strip.
  • Once all strips have been twisted, and placed on the trays and greaseproof paper with adequate gaps, beat the egg and use it to give the pastry an egg wash. You can use milk if you’d rather not use egg.

  • Place in oven and allow to bake for 20 minutes.
  • Once the twists have risen and gone a beautiful golden brown colour, remove from oven and allow to cool on a cooling rack

  • When the twists have cooled, dust with icing sugar. (I forgot to dust them, but they still tasted good!!!)
  • EAT!

These are so good slightly warm, with a cup of tea or coffee in the morning as a decadent breakfast… trust me, I’ve tried and tested it!!!

Next one will be the Carrot Cake Cupcakes! Look out for it!

Lovely Ron’s Prompt

Ronovan Writes Haiku Challenge Image 2016

Darkness & Deep

Feels like Ron’s prompt words couldn’t have come at a more apt time with all the tragedies here…

It inspired a Freku. Ron created this form which is basically a free verse poem with a three line haiku to tie it all together.

Inside us all
Is good and bad
Things make us laugh
They make us mad

How we react
Colours the world
Our actions spread
Like smoke, unfurled

If only we were
To think a while
Who will we please?
Who will we rile?

For every Yang
There is a Yin
We just need
To look within

* * *

Looking deep inside
We can find a way to change
Lighten the Darkness

Monday Madness

I had a different thought for this morning’s post initially.

Something light and fluffy, you know, the typical Ritu-style…

But I woke to news that really affected me.

Another incident.

Another attack.

Another, possibly-terrorist, attack in London.

And no, Isis won’t be claiming this one.

This time it was a white van ploughing into worshippers leaving the Finnsbury Mosque in East London, as they had finished their prayers to signal the end of their fast that day.

One dead and eight injured.

Senseless.

Revenge.

More innocents killed or injured, for what?

Most of those affected were probably law-abiding Muslim citizens, who don’t condone all the previous attacks. True Muslims, who follow their religion with respect.

Yet Islamophobia and misinformation has led to someone thinking tit for tat, an eye for an eye, is the answer.

The driver of the van was detained by the public until the Police arrived.

When will it all end? Really?

Revenge is not sweet
No. It leaves a bitter taste
Of poison spreading…
Humanity, where are you?
Compassion, this world needs you.
