#SoCS Feb 10/18 – Tail/Tale

Linda’s prompt for SoCS this week…

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “tail/tale.” Use one, used them both, you decide. Enjoy!

Let me tell you a tale about a fox
A cunning fox who wore fetching socks
This dapper mammal would use his charms
To ‘fox’ even the most capable alarms
He’d work his way through chickens galore
Sneak off, then hear the farmers roar
They’d know the fox who’d tricked them so
He’d leave a sock wherever he did go
But catch him? No, they never could
Until one farm dog swore he would
He sat and hatched a daring plan
Never tried before, by dog, or man
A trap was laid, the dog stood watch
Praying his plan just wouldn’t botch
And, as luck would have it, succeed, he did
Of that cunning fox, they were finally rid!
All that was left, causing Fox to wail
Was a cut-off, furry foxy tail.

February 8 – Flash Fiction – Fireweed

Charli’s prompt this week:

February 8, 2018, prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less) write a story that includes fireweed. You can use it as the plant, a flower, a metaphor or as the name of someone or something. Go where the prompt leads. Burn bright when you write.

“It’s hard to believe the carnage that happened here a short while ago.” Olivia looked around at the bombsite where once her home had stood.
Across the whole area, pretty purple flowers grew, giving the destroyed street a hazy filter.
“That rosebay willowherb has just taken over. It’ll take an age to clear it up too, before we can even think of rebuilding…” Janet sighed.
Fireweed… that’s what they call that, across the Atlantic, where I’m from.” Chuck, the GI who had befriended them at the dance the night previously, said. “It sure loves a bit of burned ground!”

I’m not great at researching pieces, often just going where my mind takes me with prompts, but with this one, I had to do a little reading first, as I didn’t know much about fireweed, and other than cracking a joke about fire and wee… my imagination was coming up with nothing! Apparently, fireweed was rife where the bombs had razed parts of London to the ground, during World War 2.

#WritePhoto – Sanctuary

Sue’s #WritePhoto Prompt this week:

I thought I’d continue the adventures of Barbie and Ken.

Ken sat back, contemplating his surroundings.
They had only been here a couple of days, but what with Joey copping off with whichever female he encountered, he had needed to occupy himself more than usual.
The old stone tomb found in the middle of the woods they had trekked in on the first day had become something of a sanctuary for him. He felt a peace that had been eluding him in recent weeks.
He sat there, scrolling through his photos on his phone, smiling at the images of him and Barbie – pictures filled with contented smiles and positivity.
What had happened to them?
He felt emotion welling up within, and this time, rather than will it away, he allowed tears to moisten his eyes.
“Oh Babe,” he said to the photo on his screen, “you know I love you. Why do you always think I’m interested in others? No one could ever take your place with me, not even that Sindy…”
Sindy stepped back into the shadows after pressing pause on her phone camera.
Did she have enough now, or should she go in for one last try?
