This week I was thinking I might not take part! My cupboards are such a mess, I’d be embarrassed to show you!!!

Then I remembered that there was something pretty special in my own wardrobe, that I would share with you.

wpid-2015-10-20-21.29.08.jpg.jpegIt’s a total mess, I am sorry! But along the top shelf.. now that is where the special stuff is! I know it states in the challenge, a cupboard that is hardly opened… well I don’t have one that is hardly ever opened, but this particular shelf, I don’t rummage around very often, so I hope it will do!

When I was young, my mum had a space in one of my wardrobe. a shelf which was chock full of beautiful jewel coloured shawls  Gorgeously soft and warm woollen silk shawls in all the hues of the rainbow, and even displayed like that too, sorted into the different colours.

She would choose the right one to match what ever she was to wear, when we went out, and I was so excited when I was deemed old enough to venture into this shelf myself, and borrow one!

I went to India to do all my shopping for my wedding, and the place we did a lot of the buying from, well they more or less adopted us! They directed us to all manner of places, and got us discounts for plenty, but for my mum, the icing on the cake was when they took us to a pashmina shawl warehouse! Seriously, I cannot describe my mother’s face when she saw these amazing shawls! A warehouse full! Kudos to her though, she was pretty restrained.  She bought 4-5 and tried to convince me to get a whole load, but I was trying to be sensible… we had already spent a small fortune on clothes that I wasn’t sure I would ever wear!

I bought about 4, the basic colours that would go with everything, and one special pure pashmina for my wedding day, as I was getting married in November, so it would be cold.

What this has to do with my cupboard picture?

Well as I said, along the top, haphazardly, and nowhere near as organised as my mum’s, are my shawls. My collection has grown over the years, and I have some beautiful ones.

But the special ones… I am very sentimental and the ones that are the most precious to me, are two shawls, one that belonged to my maternal grandmother, and one that belonged to Hubby Dearest’s maternal grandmother.  I won’t wear them, but knowing I have them makes me feel close to two very special ladies on our lives.

wpid-2015-10-20-21.30.40.jpg.jpegMy Grandma’s is the one on the left, my Hubby Dearest’s Grandma’s one is on the right.

If I feel the need, I can take them out and smell them, and remember those fine ladies, those wonderful souls who aren’t with us anymore.

So there you have it… my cupboard secret!

What’s in your rarely opened cupboard????

My Sorrow Cup Overflows…

I had a sad day yesterday.  Some of you may have noticed, from my Haiku post.  Since Sunday, when I drove back from my parents, I kept on seeing one magpie.  There are so many of them around, but only one at a time came into my vision.  If you know the rhyme, you know what the sighting of one single magpie is said signify, if you aren’t familiar, read more here. I thought maybe it was because we were saying bye to my brother and his family, or because we were heading home, and I was leaving my parents, but there was a bigger reason, which I found out yesterday. And feeling the sadness I still am, seeing a single Magpie again today just emphasised my sorrow.IMG_1427

It is always awful to lose a loved one, let alone two.  Even if you know the news is coming, and you prepare yourself, it is never an easy bit of news to digest.  I wrote about saying Goodbye before.

This is what I was faced with yesterday.

Our weekend had gone swimmingly, but there had been a shadow hanging over that too.

My oldest first cousin was in hospital.  She had suffered a massive heart attack 10 days previously.  After various procedures, she had emergency open heart surgery, after which she hadn’t gained consciousness. She wasn’t responding.  The odds were on the machine being switched off were very high.

We prayed that she was ok, that she would hang on, take a turn for the better even.  It was a special prayers, especially for my Finndian nephew, on Saturday. A time of joy and thanksgiving. And the fear was ever present that something could happen before, or even during the ceremony. But it didn’t. God, and my cousin were with us on that score.

On Sunday, a decision was made, that indeed, they couldn’t keep her hanging, and on Monday, once all the immediate family were gathered, her inner light was to be dimmed. The machine keeping her alive was to be switched off.

So with this bit of information, I went to work with a heavy heart yesterday.  I knew that I would receive a sorrow filled message from Pops at some point in the day.

And at 7.45am, as I was chatting to a colleague about our weekends, my phone beeped.  It was Pops. I read the words, several times over.  What I was reading was not computing.  I was expecting to read about a certain person, but instead Pops was announcing the passing of another family member.  My Great aunt.  My mother’s last surviving aunt.

Tears pooled in my eyes and began to drop. It wasn’t just the fact that we had lost a very special lady, but that I had not been expecting that news today. She was old, and yes, her time to go had been imminent for the last 4 years, but I was prepared for another bit of news, not about my dear old Great Aunt.

I just about made it through the day, checking my phone regularly, but I didn’t get the message about my cousin until after 4pm. She slipped away peacefully with all her family around her.

Two more stars graced the skies as of yesterday.  And they will be bright ones.  Both women were extremely colourful characters.  I am almost glad I didn’t see them in hospital, as they had become mere shells of themselves. I have memories of these larger than life women, who had opinions, and shared them, who fought for causes dear to their hearts, who loved us all dearly.

I spent the evening sobbing, then composing myself, only to feel tears on my cheeks again. The waiting, stress, and tension had given me a migraine too. My work were wonderful, and I had the day off today to compose myself, and make all those essential, but very tough phone calls.  Neither of these precious souls lived close to me, so shall have to time getting over there to pay my condolences.

But I have come to accept what happened.  It’s never easy.

My only fear… they say things come in threes. I may need to accidentally on purpose go and break my favourite cup, or something.  I couldn’t cope with any more bad news,

Ronovan’s Weekly Haiku Challenge – #67 Call & Cheer

image

Monday arrives, and so does the weekly haiku challenge set by our dear Ronovan.
Please check out his challenge here.
This week the prompt words are Call & Cheer.

Can I say before I write, I am not feeling too ‘cheery’ at the moment, due to some sad personal news. The only ‘calls’ I had, held sadness…

If this colours the way I think about my haiku, I apologise…

——-

Gone – Tanka

I call out to you
As you seem to be floating
Far away from me
It hits me, like a bullet
Happiness evaporates

——–

You left me then. Gone
No word to say you were off.
I feel so empty
Knowing that I shall not see
Your cheery face anymore…

Ritu 2015

I shall add another, more light hearted one that I also penned…

Last Orders – Haiku

The barman calls time
Then changes his mind… Lock In!
Cheers erupt all round!

Sod’s Law!

Oh Weekend!

Where did you go? I can’t believe it’s Monday already!

This weekend went swimmingly, with a lot of driving, but a lot of baby cuddles from my Lil Babe, my Finndian nephew! He is so gorgeous, I wish I could post a pic, but it’s something I just don’t do on here!

We had a prayers for him too, and lots of fun, but wanting to spend every minute with him, that I could meant waking at 6am on Saturday and Sunday too, so by the time I got home, I was shattered!

Last night an early night meant I was in bed at 8pm, and gently drifting off. By 10pm I was knocked out, and this meant a good 8 hours solid sleep, as my alarm was due to go off at 6am ready for school…
So why was something beeping at me at 5am??!!

After locating the offending item, I turned off my old phone, which Lil Princess had kindly turned on yesterday, to play on, and not switched off! It had an alarm on it that hasn’t been disabled!

So much for a solid 8 hours! I also had my middle of the night visitor, Lil Princess, join me at some ungodly hour, but as Hubby Dearest is away for a couple of nights, I didn’t notice too much, that an additionalbody was in bed with me!

And, (dear God!) I’ve woken up with the cold, again! This is truly not fair! I have a week left until half term, and wanted to at least be healthy until it was over!

Today I HAVE to go in… My colleague is not around, and I can’t large my team one down. Maybe I’ll perk up,once I am with those lovely children(😁) but then again, maybe not…

Here’s hoping today goes smoothly, with not too many hitches, and that this cold does one too!

Have a lovely Monday Peeps!

Spidey’s Serene Sunday – Part 36

This one is dedicated to my gorgeous nephew who I spent a short but precious weekend with…

The was we talk to children becomes their inner voice

Peggy O ‘Mara

It’s such a true quote… Makes me question how I may have talked to my own kids in the past, and whether they have been affected by it…
